Hey everyone, let's play the Blame Game! Read the following story in which a murder occurs, then rank the characters from most culpable for the murder to least culpable.

Note the first: I didn't make this story up, and there are different versions of it floating around the internet. I chose the simplest version that has the least detail. After all, the fewer details included, the more you have to fill in yourself.

Note the second: Some versions allege that the different characters stand for something, but I don't really subscribe to that notion. Besides, it's more fun to hear everyone's rationale for their rankings than pretend that there's an arbitrary 'correct' one for a given personality type.

The story goes like this:

Out in the woods a woman and her husband live alone in a cabin. One day the husband says that he has to go to town on business. His wife begs him to take her along, offering many reasons except for the real one: she has a lover on the other side of the river, but is trying to be faithful to her husband, and she knows that if her husband leaves her alone she will be unable to resist the temptation to see her lover. But her husband won't listen to her entreaties, and leaves her alone.

So she goes to visit her lover. Her lover lives on the other side of the river. There are two ways to cross the river: a bridge and a ferry. However, under the bridge lives a troll who kills everyone who tries to cross. So the woman gathers all her money and finds that it is just enough to pay the boatman for one crossing. So she takes the ferry across the river and visits her lover.

The next morning she wakes up and realizes that she needs to return home before her husband gets back. She asks her lover for some money to pay the boatman, but he refuses to give her any. So she walks to the river and explains to the boatman that she desperately needs to cross the river, but has no money. He refuses to let her on board and rows away. Out of options, the woman takes her chances with the bridge. Halfway across, she is killed by the troll.

Rank the characters from most culpable to least culpable. Here they are in alphabetical order: BOATMAN, HUSBAND, LOVER, TROLL, WIFE.

Assuming that the troll isn't human, the most culpable is the wife.  Beyond that, it's hard to say.  We aren't told enough about what each of these characters know in this hypothetical story.  Do the lover and the ferryman know that the woman is married?  These are important details if you're asking people to make moral judgments.

It's a suicide.  No blame to any of the survivors.

The troll killed her - though most of the trolls I know of seem fairly harmless so I think this might be trollist propaganda. After that its the wife's fault as it all results from her own adultery and inability to resist playing away; anti-feminist propaganda. And it seems the guys in the story are just being guys and alike with most dumb animals cant be held responsible for what we might interpret as moral failings, which is anti-male propaganda of course.

Now, none of this would have happened of course, had the husband not needed to visit the bank in town. So clearly, yet again its a case of high finance ruining the lives of many.

Troll, then wife; the lover was getting good tail and the husband is now free to.

Yours,

Troll for killing her.
Wife for not being prepared for two boat trips and taking a risk with the bridge.
Boatman for letting her cross the bridge even though everyone knows of the troll.
Lover for not giving her money even though everyone knows of the troll.
The Lover is slightly less responsible than boatman as he assumes boatman may let her on the boat out of charity or that she will find another way. i.e. offering boatman sexual favours.
Husband is not responsible in anyway as he could not foresee her journey.
