LOL... I really didn't care what "version" of the phrase you used... to me.. either is acceptable.  Just that with me being an avid golfer... it just struck me funny to see that used here... and knowing my warped sense of humour... I had to pounce.  <eg>

Since the putting/pudding subject is more interesting than the fake sub subject here is my thought. 

I was told that " proof" was like yeast and some puddings " desserts in England" im told . needed to rise ..it was the cook's way of pacifying hungry children. " The proof is in the pudding" meant it would be done soon.

How is that for useless folklore.... lol oh well I thought it was interesting...

Oddly enough the phrase "The proof is in the pudding" is a widely disputed phrase. I did a little skulking around and found this:
