Hello everyone,

After all these years all six episodes have came out for us to see in the big screen. However, most ppl old enough to remember watching episodes IV, V, and VI in the theaters aren't so impressed with episodes I, II, and III.

My best explination for this is due to desinitisation of special effects. When Episode IV hit the screen, it showed special effects never before seen. The flying in space, explosions, and master pupet work had many in awe.

However, Episodes I, II, and III used computer animation for most of it's special effects and aliens. Yippie that newer and better technology was used to make the movies. However, the technology we seen, just wasn't the same because we've seen it before in other movies. Jurasic park, T-II, and the Matrix already took dibs on the technology used to make Star Wars I, II, and III.

So unlike watching IV, V, and VI; watching I, II, and III was more of a been there done that scenerio.
This is my best explanation to why original fans may not be so impressed with the new stuff.

I totally agree with the comments about the special effects used in this new trilogy. This is exactely what I felt when I saw episodes I and II (haven't seen episode III yet...money issues).

What I loved the most of the first trilogy was the cardboard made space crafts, the spychodelia behind the speed of light effect, and the amateur laser sound effects (in this days, any casio keyboard for kids is able of doing this crazy sounds). Plus, the chemistry beetwen the actors was just fantastic.

Now, with all the computer technology, the amateur style is gone and it was replaced with the fake fantastic effects. In my opinion, It looked a lot more realistic before.

And the casting of famous hollywood stars didn't make it better. Fisher, Hammill and Ford were just beginers in the first trilogy, wich made it more dynamic. It really makes me feel like they needed this chance, and put the best effort while filming. And the new cast?...they didn't put the same amount of energy in the making of the characters.

I really don't know yet if I would like to spend my money to see this movie. (I would do it only because is the last one...and because is a movie-geek's duty).

I remember watching Star Wars at the drive in when it was first released.... Fascinating stuff back then to be sure, for all the reasons you have already mentioned.

First and foremost though, I view the Star Wars Saga as exceptional work for the story, not the effects. The Matrix cannot boast as intricate a plot, nor can it claim superior writing imho.

Star Wars will always be the first of it's kind, because there was nothing before it to compare to. Before Star Wars, sci-fi cinema had never had a plot that didn't include something that wanted to kill, eat, or enslave mankind on Earth. The plot of the Matrix is actually the sort of thing that made Star Wars such a hit in the first place.

Yes, we've seen the effects in I, II, and III before, but the story is still as compelling today as it was 28 years ago. Personally, I find the butcher job Hollywood did on Hitchhiker more disturbing than Lucas's use of CGI in Star Wars.

I have to agree, the "pizzaz" is not there for the "new'" Star Wars flicks. I think not only is it because of the aforementioned special effects, but it is simply a bit odd to have seen the end, before the beginning. I do appreciate the chance to see how the story would have, or could have evolved..but it would have been so much more interesting to see it evolve, in order, on the silver screen.
Still..to give credit where credit is due...to the first (sorry, I still consider it the first) Star Wars to hit the theater...I will never forget sitting there in the dark, seated in Indian Hills theater in Omaha, with their new wrap around screen...and seeing for the first time the screen light up with letters fading off into the universe..describing the events that led up to the crisis I was about to see...WOW.

It's funny, I never really thought of it that way. I thoroughly enjoyed Episode I (and went back to see it in the theater a few times AND bought the DVD) simply due to the fact that Liam Neeson was way hot (for me anyway! lol) and I think I paid more attention to him than anything else in the movie!

While I know the computer generated effects made the first three episodes more thrilling than the original last three (I need to go back to see Episode III at least twice more just for the opening sequence!), I tend to fixate more on the actual story than the presentation. Somehow Episodes IV - VI have a more interesting storyline for me than the first three. Does that make sense?

I think the problem of too many special effects and not enough plot or good dialog plague so many of these blockbuster movies nowadays. I think that is what the younger audience wants (or is used to), and that's what the studios give them.
Does anyone remember a movie with Barbara Hershey called the Entity (I think)? It came out in the 70's and was about ghost assaulting a woman. Based on a true story. It had minimal effects, but the sight of her bouncing on her bed like a rag doll by an invisible force scared the hell out of me.

I have to admit i enjoyed the "last" three movies of Star Wars with Fisher, Hammill and Ford to the newer ones because i saw the "last" three in a theater and the first two of the newer ones I rented..(husband doesn't like theaters). Perhaps if i had seen them in the theater, the excitement you get when there is a crowd going "ohhh" or "ahhh", the clapping of hands for the heroes, and the booing of the villans, I may have enjoyed it more.

Loved all the episodes, hope they make more!
