LadyEllen -> male and female smells..... (6/6/2007 4:20:58 AM)

This is something which interests me quite a bit - for both obvious and scientific reasons! It seems to fit only in random stupidity, so here it is!

Why do men and women smell different? I'm not talking about soap, deodorant, perfume and so on. I'm not talking about how what we eat makes us smell different. I'm interested in that core natural smell - not the sweaty and dirty smell, but how we smell after a bath or shower, before we start mixing it up with chemicals and otherwise adulterating it.

The obvious answer as to why male and female smell different is the sexual one, but those kind of smells arent meant as far as I know, to be conciously observable?

What I find is that women tend to have a much lighter smell than men, an aroma the closest to which I can compare would be bread dough; sort of yeasty and salty and sweet. Men meanwhile tend to have a stronger smell to me - again, not the unpleasant smell of body odour - salty but also bitter.

Do others observe the same? Does anyone have any ideas as to why - perhaps hormonal, or is it the conciously registered element of sexual aromas that are otherwise subconciously registered?

Well...women are made of sugar and spice  and boys are made from animal parts after all.

I think it may be to do with diet. Men eat (generally) more meat then women, perhaps that is why the different smell? But then again - not all men eat meat-so what about them?

The world may never know.

Another thought - do you think it may have something to do with all the good smelling products we lather ourselves with daily. Perhaps they seep into the pores and the smell just sort of stays? But then you have women who only use unsented products.

Definatly something to ponder.

i think you hit it in your ponderings. most animals react to hormones and chemicals. i thought perhaps muscle development might play a part, as men tend to have more muscle mass, but it's only a thought. must just be our genetic makeup.

We're made from slightly different stuff, mainly this is hormone based. You mentioned the pheremone thing, and said it's supposed to be non-noticeabe, though to be honest, it's more it's not evolved to be noticed, but it hasn't evolved to be unnoticeable either
a waft of perfume can attract you from accross the room, even without really noticing it. This is an entirely different experience from sticking your nose in the bottle.

OK - lets throw this into the mix.

As most here know I'm TS and have been on hormone treatments for a few years now. Apparently, aside from the smell of curry (which I love) and aside from the smell of cigarettes (which I dont love), I smell like a woman, (at least according to a couple of guys!)

This would seem to indicate that it must be something hormonal that is at work. I am after all, apparently, in possession of only one X chromosome and was (physically speaking at least) a functioning male in my former existence. At the same time though, I now use a lot of moisturiser and a pretty full panoply of products intended for female use - and it could be as Drawntothedark suggested, that the smell of these products is what I notice - though I dont notice anything about how I smell, but then I use non perfumed sensitive skin varieties.

Women do generally smell better; my best friend smells great even if she sweats.

Here is a thought. Perhaps it's hormones and enviroment.

My best friend is a clean freak. Completely anal about her home. Now even though it gets on my nerves the one thing I can say is that her house smells lovely. When I borrow clothes from her they just smell so clean and good that it makes me feel like a stinky little toad! That smell of hers is around her non stop. Her car smells like it, her hair smells like it (I borrowed a plastic mixing bowl from her and it smelled like it). I know it has to do with her using the same products over and over again.

After reading what you wrote - I think I'm in the thinking that it must be both.

And take into account that even though you have noticed a simular smell about woman and a simular smell about men - I'm sure an individual has their own unique smell.

I'd have to agree...I have a friend who is a fanatic about smells, her home always smells great, and she is a big fan of perfume.  I think scents can permeate the body...just like a heavy smoker will still smell like smoke, even out of the shower.
