Wow, never knew I was a nerd.  lol I enjoy a good Ren Faire, and some of the sci fi movies.  Highlander was a good one.  Enjoy the Anime as well, with subtittles.  lol  Thanks for pointing out that I am a nerd. :)  lol  Can't say I think of that as a bad thing though. :P

Our Nerditity is never a bad thing, I say!  And neither is geekdom to be considered baneful!

I LOVE Highlander!  Except for Highlander 2 (in any incarnation), I like almost everything (more or less) that the Highlander franchise put out.  And yes, I actually liked the latest movie, "Highlander: the Source."  I avoided reading anything about the film and even made sure to NOT watch any trailers prior to watching the Source, and in the end, found it rather enjoyable.

I don't understand/speak Japanese, so I really prefer the dubbed versions of anime.  I prefer the adult-oriented kind, of course, with lots of cartoon jiggle and nonconsensual toon sex.

So, what sci-fi films do you like the best?

EPGAH -> RE: Nerd Power? (9/26/2007 1:42:09 PM)

I love Anime, computers (I'm a computer repairman), and especially RPGs...While I don't like the MMO concept (Having to CONTINUE to pay money to play seems wrong somehow...Whatever happened to buying the box and having no further contact with the company?)
The best MMO I've played so far was City of Villains (Justice Server)...Almost pure combat, although the "Enhancement Diversification" screwed everyone over (THE #1 problem with MMOs: The "owners"--Which is NOT YOU--can make changes to the game rules for any reason, and/or no reason at all...and the changes will usually hurt the players, ruining their carefully-built characters and abrogating/nullifying months of play--and you're PAYING for it! A sort of meta-masochism?)

Durus -> RE: Nerd Power? (9/26/2007 4:57:32 PM)

I'm a nerd by profession (IT) and enjoy a lot of "nerd" activities. I also enjoy a lot of activities that are not nerdy. I'm completely comfortable debating Original Trek vs. The Next Generation , playing mmorpgs/rpgs, doing girly shots with narcisistic yuppie scum, playing poker in smoke filled back rooms, or blowing a couple hundred bucks in ammo at the range.

That being said I would take a mousy nerdy girl over a bimbo 9 times out of 10.

Geeks and Nerd unite!

Najakcharmer -> RE: Nerd Power? (9/26/2007 8:23:47 PM)

Chiming in on the grrrl-geek gamer side.

aidan -> RE: Nerd Power? (9/27/2007 10:27:07 PM)

I would be remiss if I didn't chime in with my fellow nerds and geeks.

*starts strumming "In The Garage" by Weezer on a guitar covered in stickers from the back of Nintendo Power and Star Wars cereal promotions*

I have five differ
ent D&D3.5 characters, 3 d20 Modern characters, a Nintendo Wii, 100+ hours logged into The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and 30 into Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. I cried at the end of Final Fantasy VI. I'm probably going to be eaten by a Grue. My favorite t-shirt has a picture of a vaccum cleaner floating among the stars on it. My most prized posessions are my hardcover signed Dark Tower novels and my laptop. I read Dracula, The Lost World (Arthur Conan Doyle and Michael Crichton versions), The Hobbit before I was eight years old. We had to bring in pictures of people we considered authority figures to help us focus at work; Mine were of Optimus Prime and Batman. I have a zombie survival shelter. I still believe in Superman, even if nobody else does. I still want to be a superhero when I grow up.

And I wear glasses. *rawk*

Forget about it.

Needs are hot.
My d% says so.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen people proclaiming themselves as nerds in a good sense.

I wouldn't say that.

But then again, I hang out on RPG websites, play MMOs, have pretty much the standard geek movie library, and quote Monty Python, Firefly, and the Simpsons with starting regularity.

So I'm not exactly unbiased. ;)

JackHammer2000 -> RE: Nerd Power? (1/15/2008 3:20:51 PM)

We should have our own forum.

Hmmm....

We will be outnumbered and outvoted in the nation our forefathers built! The current birthrate of 1.25 means that for each 100 Americans, after only five future generations, there will be less than 10 nerds!

Hate to say it, but it's quite unlikely our forefathers (you know? The ones who actually did the building?) were of any sort of above-average intelligence.

A quick look at literacy rates today vice 1780 alone points out that people are far better educated than they ever were.

I've never identified as a nerd.  I did Dungeons and Dragons, played Magic: The Gathering, was raised on video games, and can recite The Holy Grail backwards.  But I'm also a former Marine, a rock musician, I wear a biker jacket, and have dated some incredibly beautiful women in my day.

People who huddle in the dark cursing the world get exactly what they deserve.  It's that 'us vs them' mentality that further drives social ineptness and poor hygiene.  Coming out from your parents basement, finding a job even if it's 'beneath' you, and making an effort to live in the world you're in, instead of retreating to the enclave of the sweaty, sugary drink ostriches who live for the next Ren Faire, and you might be surprised.

As another famous willow once said

"
I'm not ashamed. It's the computer age. Nerds are in. They're still in, right?"

Feric -> RE: Nerd Power? (1/18/2008 6:10:21 PM)

I saw a bumper sticker a while back: "Be kind to nerds. You'll probably end up working for one!"

In America, even the U.S. Government has officially projected that those of above average intelligence will become a minority in four or five decades.

Well that generally would be the case, there are going to be more people with less than average or average intelligence (combined) than there will be people with above average intelligence..... If everyone started getting smarter, that would just mean the "average" person would also be smarter, and people with above average intelligence would STILL be less than average + below average combined.... That's just the way averages work.

(Unless you had a significant gap in intelligence one way or the other that would throw off the average, anyway, like a huge group of people at an IQ of 200 and then nobody with an IQ between 125 and 200, or whatever -- I know IQ isn't a great number to use but it illustrates the point)

In any case, nerds for the win. =)
