Just read an article in this week's "Newsweek" about "sexsomnia." According to the article, written by Anne Underwood, it's an advanced form of sleepwalking and covers the gamut of sexual activity, from fondling to intercourse, with one crucial difference. The patients apparently have no conscious awareness of what they're doing and, when wakened, have no recollection of it. Though the researchers found only 31 reported cases in the medical literature, psychologist Michael Mangan's website on sleepsex has registered comments from more than 1,000 sufferers.

Apparently, sleepsex is very different from the average sex dream. Dreams occur during REM sleep, when the body is largely paralyzed. Sleepsex takes place during partial arousal from deep sleep, when one is free to move. Some of the cases are rather comical. "One man had been initiating intercourse on almost a nightly basis," says Mangan. That was apparently fine with his wife, until "one night he started snoring." In another case, a woman routinely groped her husband. Whenever he responded to her advances, she'd wake up "and accuse him of forcing sex on her while she slept."

Doctors say that sleepsex can lead to both physical and psychological damage. Bed partners have been known to suffer lacerations. "It's not uncommon," it was explained, "for male sexsomniacs to display much rougher behavior during sleepsex than waking sex." One man masturbated in his sleep with such energy that he suffered repeated bruising of the penis.

Apparently, the condition is highly treatable with the generic anti-anxiety drug clonazepam.

I'm not sure every couple would WANT to treat it. All that action, especially of the "rougher" variety, could be pretty fun.

Any "sleepsex" sufferers here? Or "sleepsex" enjoyers?...................luci

I've had sex while I was sleeping more times than I am positive of. NBD. I gave my partners concent before anything happend so its ALL good.

I used to initiate sex quite frequently with my ex while I was sleeping. Neither of us found it to be a bad thing though.

Unfortunately I do one other thing while sleeping that isn't so great though. I will answer any question asked of me. This is a particularly bad thing at Christmas time!

no sleep sex, but i do sleepwalk when i get overstressed.

a little over a year ago, i cut my hair off, in chunks, nearly down to the scalp. it was nearly down to my mid-back, and i had to buzz cut it to make it even. its just now gotten to where its about an inch below my shoulders.
