I see the effect of global warming every day, as I live in the mountains of northern Canada. This planet is fucked up. Its natural cycle of cooling and warming has been accelerated unnaturally. Rainfall and snow patterns are totally haywire. If you want to stick your head in the sand like George W., go right ahead, the rest of us are looking to our social responsibility and our responsibility to mother nature.

P.S.: fargle, good to see you again...but really, we don't need borderline science fiction. We can get all the power we need right down here on the ground with so many different non-polluting technologies that are working right now. And it all comes from the sun anyway, all power does one way or another.

Heck, if I weren't already a different sort of Pagan I'd almost be tempted to become a sun worshipper (in the real sense, not someone who uses a lot of SPF45).

"We Can Run But We Can't Hide"
Words by John Perry Barlow; music by Brent Mydland

We don't own this place, though we act as if we did,
It's a loan from the children of our children's kids.
The actual owners haven't even been born yet.

But we never tend the garden and rarely we pay the rent,
Some of it is broken and the rest of it is bent
Put it all on plastic and I wonder where we'll be when the bills hit.

[Chorus:]
We can run,
But we can't hide from it.
Of all possible worlds,
We only got one:
We gotta to ride on it.
Whatever we've done,
We'll never get far from what we leave behind,
Baby, we can run, run, run, but we can't hide.
Oh no, we can't hide.

I'm dumpin' my trash in your back yard
Makin' certain you don't notice really isn't so hard
You're so busy with your guns and all of your excuses to use them.

Well, it's oil for the rich and babies for the poor,
We got everyone believin' that more is more,
If a reckoning comes, maybe we will know what to do then.

[Bridge:]
All these complications seem to leave no choice,
I heard the tongues of billions speak with just one voice,
Saying, "Just leave all the rest to me,
I need it worse than you, you see."
And then I heard...
The sound of one child crying.

Today I went walking in the amber wind,
There's a hole in the sky where the light pours in
I remembered the days when I wasn't afraid of the sunshine.

But now it beats down on the asphalt land
Like a hammering blow from God's left hand
What little still grows cringes in the shade like a bad vine.

What, I suppose, some find amusing, is that arch-conservative, wannabe-Neocon types endlessly throw out peurile and idiotic attacks at anybody who might disagree with them, without actually bothering to provide any sort of empirical information to support their position.

Boggles the imagination.

I am sure all the kool aid drinkers will ignore this, but for those who actually are interested in facts, take a look.

Oh, great, now we're posting position papers by lobbyist organizations in the pocket of Big Tobacco.

You always have to check up on who's doing the talking--especially when they don't bother to supply any facts.

Edited to add:  I'm laughing here.  Your editorial said this:

Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades.

Well, guess what.  There was no Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature.  There was a Jan. 17 issue, but I already checked: it doesn't say anything of the kind.

It's not "borderline science fiction". It's 1970's era technology.

I gotta say, I expected to see some kind of "Oops, I guess that was not such a great link for me to post" after the utter demolition I carried out last night.  But I guess that was optimistic of me, wasn't it...

Ozone is created at the top of the atmosphere by the action of cosmic rays hitting O2 molecules, splitting off single oxygen atoms, which recombine with O2 to make O3 (ozone)

We started to see massive holes in the ozone layer because Chloroflourocarbons eat away at the extra oxygen on an ozone atom, and these eat them away continually.

People stopped release chloroflourocarbons into the atmosphere, naturally occuring processes reproduced Ozone.  The main exceptions are rocket launches with solid fuel boosters, which still use chloroflourocarbons.  These create huge holes in the ozone layer each time they punch through it.

I am a bit puzzled which part of this is the "fallacy" you are referring to.

No, no, no, think *BIG!*

And no, they do that "necktie" stuff in that toilet of a country that they call Haiti.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Global warming?? (7/9/2007 2:21:24 PM)

The July, 2007, issue of Scientific American wasn't a good one for global-warming deniers.

First there was a report that a Dutch team has failed to reproduce the controversial results, announced earlier, that plants produce significant amounts of methane, and now dispute the other team's findings (p. 16).  Even on Collarme, self-anointed experts have used the methane canard.

Then there's a creepy article about all the hurricanes we've been experiencing (pp. 44-51).  What's causing all these strong hurricanes?  Warmer oceans.  What's causing warmer oceans?  You guessed it...

And finally, just in case readers haven't gotten the point, there's an article about what the earth would look like if human beings were removed (pp. 76-81).

Of course, we can always just ignore this stuff and believe The Heartland Institute (a.k.a. Cigarettes R Us).  Sure, that makes me feel much better.

uwinceismile -> RE: Global warming?? (7/9/2007 3:12:59 PM)

sinergy,
the fallacy i speak of,,is one of the use of language.
for instance, "hole " in the ozone....
in fact,,there has been a thinning of the layer of the ozone...no hole.
and remarkabley enuff,,,,this phenomon doesnt happen over our major cities, or even over our larger industrial areas....
it happens over the poles of the earth... where crazily enuff,, there are not a great deal of humans to have done a great deal of damage to the ozone.
i dunno,,maybe all the cfc's  are carried to the poles due to some magic dust floating in our  atmosphere?
or mabe, just maybe .... the thinning layer is in those areas because sunlight is needed to create the ozone layer,(remember all ur talk of  cosmic rays)? and seeing how the poles go without sunlight for many months of the year,,,they have a natural thinning layer of ozone ..
and what do ya know???  the ozone layer "thickens up" when teh sunlight returns....
now that is not to say that we havent had a negative affect on the ozone, or our atmoshere in general,,,i believe we have....
but at least use the proper verbage,,it doesnt need to be made more sensational with words like "hole"

btw??  u free to come to a redneck neck tie party this weekend?
p.s.  i remember when the jungle was called the jungle,,and not the tropical rain forrest... i mean hell,, who is gona wanna send a donation to save the jungle right?

And to all the motherfuckers who want to turn this into yet another "I don't believe in global warming it's a goddamned hoax I mean all those evil scientists I hate them HATE them I tell you" thread--well, be my guest.

What would be the point, anyone on the boards who believes the global warming hoax, is not going to change their mind based on what i say, and anyone who doesn't believe it, doesn't need convincing. Sounds like a total waste of time if you ask me...

CuriousLord -> RE: Global warming?? (7/9/2007 4:45:55 PM)

Global warming's a tough subject. People touting an idea one way or the other will claim the "scientific method". I assure you, they are failing to use it properly. Scientifically, global warming is a "theory" in the regard that it seems to be an idea with some basis, though we're not entirely sure about it. The ideas as to its causes are even more up in the air (assuming it does exist).

I'm not saying it doesn't exist. I'm not saying it does. I'm giving the honest analysis that we just don't know at this point. I would advise precautionary measures- such as, if we think CO_2 might be causing this problem that might exist, let's try to cut down on it.

Personally, I hold environmental issues in high regard. I think a green movement would be an absolutely wonderful thing. Still, I won't claim that global warming and its status as a human effect are definate.

Too many agendas are causing too many people to misstate the situation.

i could cut and paste the three times i saw that gentlemen quote that same figure to fix 3 different issues,,,on 3 different threads,,,,but whats the use?
would that be the "evidence" u would need to "allow" my post to pass with out being called out?

honestly, i dont see where it helps to go to a right wing blog , (assuming you lean that way)..
or a left wing blog (if u lean that way)  to bolster how i feel? i make few if any absolute statements, what i post is generally how i feel....i assume thats ok with you? or perhaps i should email u first for permission?

and frankly,,,,i would suggest that if anyone here would like to look,,,it is you who attacks from a political view point,,,more often then not, not i (re - read  the beginning of this post to see what i mean)
and yes,,it does boggle the imagination, doesnt it?
