"Someone convinced against thier will, will hold the same opinion still."
I heard this quote the other day when speaking with someone wanting to sell me something, and got me thinking a bit about how this idea may relate to some debates, advice,ect.. that take place on the boards.Also how this may relate to communication in our relationships.
My take on it is that if someone is actually convinced, then thier opinion has changed. If it is merely peruasion, then perhaps the opinion may not be changed.Your ideas?

I'm not sure youre reading it correctly - though it does have two meanings.

I read it as the person will still hold the opinion they always did, despite appearing to have changed their minds under pressure.

I don't think you can be truly "convinced" if it was against your will.

You can't be convinced unless you do it willingly - otherwise it's giving lip service to shut someone up or cohersion.  "Convinced" means absolutely sure about something - how can that be attained against someones will?   Forcing someone to face a truth they would rather run away from?  Trying to think of examples....

If I logically disbarred your God- to the point you would stop believing in anything about religion, should you have no cared either way- would you be convinced God didn't exist?

No offense intended over religion.  It's just a good example of something people want to believe in and, therefore, do.

You can't use logic to disbarr God.  Just like i can't use intuition to create an atomic bomb.  i read the other thread CL where you spoke about your no God theory - sorry but it didn't make sense to this monkey lol.

Actually, I am not certain as to how your rephrasing for example applies to the quote.
In reference to your example, God and religion are not the same. So no. No offense taken, none meant.
Just because someone "wants" does not mean they "do".
Let's please stay on topic.

Just an observation on how you worded something here and where your thinking may not be in line with how the religously inclined think.  They don't "want" to believe in God they just "do" believe in God, they are moved by faith, an inner knowing, call it intuition if you like.  You are an admitted atheist - you do not want to believe in God because you prefer to think and experience your world using logic and linear thinking, he doesn't fit into that world, so you have no connection to Him.

This kind of remninds me of a slave type theory,
The master takes the slave to chuch and prays along side them, the slaves say all the right phases, but still in thier hearts they are worshiping the moon goddess. For example.
Another one would be the Irish stopped the wearing of the plaids to go along with the English at a point in time, But still they were Irish all the same.
Merely stating that a conquored race would also give up their *public* opinion that as to insite thier conquorers.
But still most Irish I know consider death before dishonor. So that really does tend to (not be convinced*).,,,jmo
I have seen a lot of people (just go along with the program also)
