Gingrich forecasts GOP losses in 2008
By BEN EVANS, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 10 minutes ago

Republican Newt Gingrich, in a jab at President Bush, warned on Friday that the GOP will lose the White House and Congress in 2008 if the nominee is perceived as a continuation of the Bush presidency.

Addressing a conservative organization, the former House Speaker never mentioned the president by name, but his political point was clear.

"If the Republicans run a stand-pat presidential candidate who ends up being on defense for all of September and October and who is seen by the country as representing four more years, the fact is that Republicans are not going to" win, Gingrich told the American Enterprise Institute.

Americans believe in both evolution, creationism: poll
Fri Jun 8, 2:34 PM ET

Asked their views on whether human life is a result of God's creation or a product of evolution, one quarter of Americans chose both conflicting theories, a poll suggested Friday.

"All told, 25 percent say that both creationism and evolution are definitely or probably true," USA Today said.

Overall, more Americans expressed a strong belief in creationism, or the theory that God created humans in their present form at a single period in time within the last 10,000 years.

Prober: CIA ran secret jails in Europe
By ELAINE GANLEY, Associated Press Writer 24 minutes ago

The CIA ran secret jails in Poland and Romania to interrogate key terror suspects, shackling and handcuffing inmates, keeping some naked for weeks and reducing contact with the outer world to masked and silent guards, a European investigator said Friday.

The CIA called the report "distorted," but stopped short of denying the existence of prisons in the two countries — the agency said it does not discuss the location of its overseas facilities. Poland and Romania also vehemently denied the allegations

Dalai Lama: Tibet culture could soon end
Thu Jun 7, 11:23 PM ET

The Dalai Lama warned Friday that Tibetan culture could be "finished" in 15 years if China does not allow the region to govern itself.

"Our approach is not seeking independence," the exiled spiritual leader told reporters in Melbourne. "We are seeking genuine autonomy to preserve Tibetan culture, Tibetan language and the Tibetan environment."

There are a few European governments that are hoping this story will go away because while the Council of Europe has no legal powers, it has a strong moral influence and there are enough prosecutors in various European countries that would be willing to run with a case. It says in the article that EU officials believe Poland and Romania's denials, EU officials are under instruction from EU governments, the exact people that want the story buried. However, there are plenty of Members of the European Parliament that will be more than happy to pick up the baton and run with the story because there are sanctions that the EU can take against guilty countries. No doubt the Parliament would be over ruled by national politicians but that could provoke an action in the European Court (different from the Council of Europe). It would be politically very messy and embarrassing for those leaders involved and reputations and credibility could ruined even though any legal sanctions are unlikely.

MC, I would be shocked if it went any further, for the reasons you mentioned.

......worryingly anti-scientific trend perhaps?

Perhaps. Or hopefully (from my vantage point [:D]), we'll see an increase in those that believe in God and evolution.

I saw something about one of the contenders comments amounting to .............. "well I believe in god and gods in the miracles business so anything is / was possible"

Now how can you logically and scientifically argue against that?

And how will this play to other people from secular countries or countries of different faiths.
The Man to be president he say ................... miracles they happen. !!

Oh, I have plenty of faith in the potentiality of people, it's the follow-through that leaves me disillusioned. I hear Brando in the background.... "we coulda been someone.... we coulda been a contender...." [X(]

Of course, every single nominee would (at least publically) stand by such statements.
