They said on the news that HBO's switchboard was overloaded after last night's episode. The problem with any grand expectation is that disappointment is more common then fulfillment.

I've always been a "Fugitive" type ending person. Find the 'one-armed man' and everyone goes home. Hitchcock movies, like the Birds, use to piss me off. In this case the ending went for realism instead of climax. Life goes on was the thread. Nothing changed in the Soprano home family. The only difference between the first episode and the last was the kids were older. There was the threat of arrest, ongoing investigation, internal and external pressure on the "business", and of course - food.

Remember this isn't the end. The big screen awaits all the survivors. James Gandolfini says he's tired of doing 'Tony' but in a couple years he may need a few million dollars to reprise the role.

Which was the worst series ending episode? I pick a few I thought didn't live up to expectations, although the knock on the door at the end of Cheers was interesting. I know there are others, I just don't remember this morning.

Edited to add:
quote:

It was guaranteed to leave you screaming at the TV set. Whether you laughed later depended on your sense of humor, and sense of betrayal. At the end, I groaned, then chuckled, then groaned again. I wanted more, and didn't want it to just come to a screeching, annoying halt. I wasn't furious, just disappointed. But, I have to admit, I was surprised.
I could be angrier, but I see the perverse point Chase was making. He didn't want to wrap up things neatly, if at all, and after the endless speculation about how "The Sopranos" would end, he conspired to make the series just as endless. Despite HBO's slogan - "It's not TV, it's HBO" - Chase was reminding us all, with a slight sneer, that hey, it is just TV after all. Actually, I found it to be exactly what I expected...disappointing, just like the last five seasons which they made you wait literally years to see.  I watched it just out of curiosity, not some great desire to see the ending.  They lost my interest a long time ago.  I think the last good season for them was the one when Furio had the hots for Carmella.  After that season it kept going downhill and I only watched when nothing else was on.

At least it didn't end with A.J. holding a snow globe.

there were so many guys in that one diner and i could see Tony watching each and every one of them like he was expecting someone to whack him ...especially that guy who went to the men's room (reminded me of that scene from the Godfather before Michael whacks the boss and police chief inside the restuarant) ...and then - BAM! i though my cable went out!  i was highly pissed - such an unconcluded ending!

I thought the ending was just as it turned out to be...business as usual for the Sopranos.  they could have made the entire last season into three episodes and not wasted so much time.  makes me wish I had tivo.

I had a call near the end so paused the TV.  When I hit play I rewinded it a few times because I thought my TV was acting up or the satellite went out.  Nope.  I was pissed.  That was really lame.

Level,
It ranked a close 2nd worse for me. I gave the nod for bad to MASH because the last show took the main character, Hawkeye, out of character. Granted they put him in an exceptional situation, but he went from being confident dominant personality in control of everything to a whimpering submissive quicker than many multiple profile posers on CM.

Seinfeld was a self proclaimed "show about nothing". Creating a story line enabling 9 years of characters a curtain call was ambitious. The court room "drama" was a good vehicle for that purpose even if it did abandon the show's fundamental concept.

I voted for St. Elsewhere, it was one of my fav shows and I hate the way it ended, as if the entire thing came from the mind of an autistic kid.  Bizarro!

Same thoughts exactly here too, I was not a happy camper with the Dish Network, lol.

P.S.  Never watched:
MASH, Seinfield, Cheers, Friends or St. Elsewhere.

There was such potential there with Furio! and, much of the show went downhill for me after that season. I still love the dynamics of the show though.

The series Night Court had a horrible ending. Loved the show but everything ended quite oddly.

The problem with series endings is that you expect closure. You expect to have answers for things that have become thematic throughout the series run. The problem is that even in real life the conclusions that we get are not always the ones we wanted.

The Sopranos were no different. Although I had not seen the show in quite some time, I have read how the series ended and many conclusions could be drawn from the ending but there is no definitive answer. The funny thing is that as a faithful viewer of a series we feel we are owed closure... we hate things that leave us hanging. The series was always unsettling to a degree due in large part to the volatility of the mafia and the fact that your friend one minute is putting a bullet into you the next. Nothing personal, just business. So, the writers left the series in much the same way, it is unsettling and too many things remain unanswered.

One of the best endings of a movie I have ever seen was for The Silence Of The Lambs. Hannibal just saunters off into a crowd of people. It left so much open. If they had stopped making movies about Hannibal right there, I could think of nothing more terrifying than to know that that psycho was among us and roaming freely.

I guess I look at it in an artistic way, there is a certain beauty to the way the Sopranos ended.
