damia -> Finding a Mentor (6/12/2007 9:48:22 PM)

Greetings,

My name is Jewel. I am a female switch, who has experience as a slave, but is very new to exploring her dominant side. I am thinking I could really use a mentor, to show me how to explore my dominance and how to work out the dynamics of a relationship.

Does anyone have tips on how to find a mentor? I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, and don't know the local community, so if anyone knows of the local community (munches, clubs, households, etc), I'd be grateful for that information as well.

~Jewel

Ok, I've also updated my profile...is there no one who has any advice on seeking a mentor, either online or (preferably) in real-time? Or even has advice for how to make my profile better (other than adding a picture..I currently don't have any pictures to upload, and no digital camera or webcam to take them with...the webcam's packed away).

This isn't quite what you're looking for, but chiming in.  I would be very reluctant to engage with anyone who can not provide a pic.  Sorry, but it's just My opinion.

Some way of proving who you are is helpful, I would think, even in being mentored by someone.  There are a lot of freaks out there.  I love the couple's profiles with just a male in fem dress... yeah right!  But then I am jaded.

Welcome to CM and the Forums, Jewel.  There are many of us who would be happy to mentor you, or at least point you in the right direction, but you will benefit most by face-to-face contact and participation with others.

I would suggest that you find a local munch group.  Going to events will aid you in finding other like-minded people.  Talk to the regulars and become involved, and eventually you will find those who are willing to help you explore your dominant side.

I suggest trying a search, like Raleigh Munch, or North Carolina munches in browser and in yahoo groups.  There is bound to a few. Good Luck!  (have you also tried emailing any of the Dominants in North Carolina?

Well, my preference would be someone that I meet first at a munch or club...that's why I asked for advice on finding a mentor, not asking if anyone wanted to mentor me or anything like that. I much prefer face-to-face contact.

The problem is, the sites that I have found for the Raleigh area community...the links are broken, and I can't find the new ones (I know there is something called the Training Camp (TTC), and I know there is a munch group around here somewhere...but I don't know where they meet or when they meet.

As for pics...some people just don't have a scanner, digital camera, or webcam available, and frankly, I don't normally take pictures. I have light sensitivity, so other than when my webcam is up, I don't do pictures, because the flash leaves me with a headache that could last hours. So, my options are slim as far as a picture. But it really shouldn't matter, because I'm not looking for an online mentor, anyway, but I don't think I made that clear. I like to chat online, and talk about issues, but I wouldn't take someone as a mentor whom I've never met in person *shrug* Had too many bad experiences over the internet to allow that.

I don't know the US locations very well. But is Raleigh close to other towns or cities which do have active groups? If you could get out to a munch once a month you'd soon find someone who lives in your area.

Try starting a group yourself. Skip Yahoo Groups cause the adult groups aren't searchable online anyway. Begin a weblog and try promoting it in BDSM sites like CollarMe. Stick the link in your signature and see what nibbles. It will take some time but you could get lucky and find a great mentor or at least a few others to meet for coffee. A group would be a great way to get answers too.

I am sorry that you are having a problem locating a munch group in your area.  Having no idea exactly where you live (and it is your right to keep that private here), I cannot recommend anything.  You will simply have to search the Web for links to local munches.  I do not keep track of them, so I cannot provide any information for your area.  Google it.

I don't know your age, but I suspect that you are younger than I am.  When I was a lad, there were no BDSM groups, no parties that I knew of, and no written information about BDSM.  Time was not on my side, but it is there for you.  You might have to travel as much as 50 to 100 miles to find a BDSM munch, but at least there are options for you in most large cities.  If it is important enough, then make the effort and resolve to take that necessary trip in order to find yourself.

If you meet people in person, forget about pictures.  They don't matter.  Just locate where you belong.
