NEWARK, N.J. - “Sopranos” fans who thought the series’ open-ended conclusion was a setup for a movie may be in for disappointment: Creator David Chase says it isn’t so.

NEW YORK - The songwriters of Journey’s power ballad “Don’t Stop Believin”’ were “jumping up and down” when they learned a few weeks ago it had been licensed for use in the final episode of “The Sopranos.”

But even they couldn’t believe how it would prove so integral to one of the most memorable final scenes in television history.

NEW YORK - There was no decisive moment, no seismic shift, no ceremony when James Gandolfini put “The Sopranos” behind him. But he has. Comfortably.

“I was told that it would be a transition,” he says and shakes his head. “Not much. It’s very calming to move on.”

NEW YORK - In the already infamous conclusion of “The Sopranos,” the camera ominously panned to a number of background actors populating the diner where the family sat down for its last televised meal.

Seldom have nameless extras been so integral to such a historic moment in television. Depending on your perspective, they could be viewed as either red herrings meant to distract bloodthirsty fans waiting for an explosive finale — or as Tony’s potential killers who struck at the instant the screen abruptly went black.

From that ending you have to surmise it was lights out for Tony and his family except for the daughter, Meadow, who couldn't park her car in time. Tony's family was saying good-bye at the table and the music was too.

The ominous guy went to the restroom, came out and Tony looked up at him as the TV went dead. Remember in past expisodes when someone was wasted, the sound would go out and it would be a surreal moment. This was sound out and lights out for good...except for Meadow.

Not if you listen to the lyrics of the Journey song.  It perfectly sums up The Sopranos.

Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

In my corner of the universe, they had dinner, and then went about their usual business, they survived the cable fuzz.  And Tony will always be looking over his shoulder.  I didn't expect a tidy ending, that would've been a disappointment.  I have a bigger complaint with that song, the only thing I like about it is the intro.

Also would have worked...

"And life went on beyond the Palisades..."

Though it might have been too down-tempo.

ok...i read this on myspace...and it has made more sense to me than anything else i have read so far...

thanks Michael...

What happened to Tony?

He was killed....

in fact, the ending was genius if you've paid attention to the show or are just a fan of well developed well thought out plots that all tie together and have the memory of a champ to remember it all

the ending was simple, he got killed, but let me tell you why and
Explain in detail... There was 3 people in the room total who had a
Reason to kill Tony.....

the two black guys, they were paid before to kill Tony but he was only shot in the ear, this was in one of the earlier seasons,

also in the earlier seasons, the trucker who was sitting at the bar
stool, who the camera kept focusing in on, is Nicky Leotardo, Phil
Leotardos nephew, he was in one of the early season episodes where Phil and Tony have a sit down....

heres where the genius comes in....

When Tony's walking in the diner, you see the camera focus on him, then it switches to his perspective, and you see him looking at the booth he's gonna sit at...

then the camera switches back to Tony's face, then it once again
Switches to his perspective, and it shows him looking at the door and looking at the people come in..... Every time the door opens the Chimes sound....... Carmela walks in, Chimes, AJ walks in Chimes, this when Meadows parallel parking, still trying to get inside the restaurant....

at this point the camera switches back to the trucker who goes in the bathroom......

Then it goes to a scene where meadow finally parks and starts running in the diner....

The doors about to open, Tony looks up....

And No Chimes......................

No Music............

Everything just goes black...............

In one of the early episodes of the Sopranos, Tony's talking with Bobby about what it must feel like to die......

Bobby says "at the end, you probably don't hear anything, everything just goes black"

part of that was revisited in the second to last episode during the
Last seconds of it, when Tony's about to go to sleep and he flashes back to the memory of him and Bobby on the boat... "You probably don't hear anything everything just goes black"

So in the end, the Journey song don't stop believing was playing, the chimes on the door sounded but when Meadow came in, the guy in the trucker hat came out and killed Tony...

its the reason you didn't hear, or see anything when he died.... it was from his perspective.... and everything went black, then the credits rolled

So, there you go. Now you have it. I mean.......in case you were wondering that is. If not, why did you read this whole thing to the end?

Pass this along to all your Soprano watching friends who didn't get it......they'll thank you because I'm sure they are still talking about how bad the ending was. Now you can make their day and clear it all up for them

No wonder here.  No way would Chase would kill off a possible future pay day from a movie.

OK, I like it, but...unfortunately it's not true.  It's already been exposed as a hoax:

Simplyeli, I buy that. I mean it could have been anything, but we have to go with what is given us.

LOS ANGELES - Fans of “The Sopranos” are seizing on clues suggesting the controversial blackout which abruptly ended the TV mob drama meant that Tony Soprano was rubbed out, and HBO said on Thursday they may be on to something.

One clue in particular, a flashback in the penultimate episode to a conversation between Tony and his brother-in-law about death, gained credence as an HBO spokesman called it a “legitimate” hint and confirmed that series creator David Chase had a definite ending in mind.

“While he won’t say to me 100 percent what it all means, he says some people who’ve guessed have come closer than others,” HBO spokesman Quentin Schaffer told Reuters after speaking to Chase.

I have never even watched ONE episode of the Sopranos.  I did go to you tube and watch the ending, so I have a fresh eye on it with no expect ions.  I saw two messages in it for the viewers.

Tony is talking to his Son and told him to "remember the good times" and the song ending on the word's "don't stop".   So don't stop remembering the good time you had viewing the show.
