Status: offline 		I found this quite interesting today as I had a bdsm-themed movie in my Netflix queue. Well, the movie has been in my queue for several months (I just never got around to moving it up to the top). A few days ago, Netflix announced its cooperative venture with WalMart, and well, today, Netflix puts a message on my queue that the movie that was in my queue is no longer offered by Netflix and was removed from my queue. Further attempts to find this same message or to find the original movie on Netflix were unsuccessful.

The sad thing is: no one really seems to care, but I see this happening a lot lately in a number of different areas. And people keep justifying it, as if it is all right because we have to keep this horrible information away from children or something bizarre like that. Well, we've succeeded. We're keeping it away from children. And me.

In reality, we must be 18 or older in order to have an account with these places as we pay for it with a credit card. Thus, we are stating that we're old enough to view said material. It seems that this should let them off the hook, but Walmart is notorious for promoting "morality". Some of it I agree with, some I don't.

Status: offline 		Actually, blockbuster is 100x worse in this regard. My fear is that Netflix is going to move to become what Blockbuster is.

You need to write a letter to netflix strongly protesting their removal of the title. If they don't hear from any customers after they take such an action, the action stands. You need to give them feedback.

Personally, with all the bad stuff I've heard about Netflix from other sources, this latest thing means I'd never consider using them.

Status: offline 		I understand your consternation, but don't call it censorship. Censorship would be correct if say, the FCC was involved. This is a business decision. And in your case, they lost your business it seems.

Status: offline 		But in effect it is censorship. It's just not GOVERNMENT censorship. Yes, I understand that it's their business, etc. etc., but when megacorporations start taking the power to determine what people can watch, it becomes as good as censorship.

(Remember all the crap last year about not using Visa for anything that might offend the Religious Right? That was all about getting their bankruptcy deal through Congress.)

The only way to fight this is to make sure everyone knows you're pissed off about it. If enough people are pissed off and it starts to affect their profits, they'll change their practices.

Status: offline 		not to be overly political but the difference between government censorship and corporate censorship is razor thin. Theres mountains of evidence supporting the contention that we live in a corporatist state where even the military arm is used only to further the gains of certain large corporations. For example theres 8.8 billion dollars missing in the halliburtton allocation (which totals more then what we've promised for reconstruction by the way) and we've only disbursed 5 billion toward actual reconstruction. Go figure.

Status: offline 		I bailed on Netflix long ago in favor of GreenCine. They have a better selection of independant and foreign films than Netflix and haven't sold their souls to Satan.

Status: offline 		I think the thing that bugs me the most about having a post here moved from the regular area where I read to this section (The Lobby) is that I NEVER read the lobby, so yet again another post I have put forth is delegated to death due to some moderator that is responding to some of the follow up posts (because this most definitely was about bdsm, and the follow ups sent it completely off track).

I guess it's why I post so little here anymore.

Leather is related to bdsm, but I wouldn't post something asking about rights of cows.

And it's certainly not put to death, lots of threads do great in the lounge.
