"Mystery Solved: Mars had large oceans"

By Dave Mosher
Wednesday, June 13, 1:45 pm, ET

" Since 1991, planetary scientists have floated the idea that Mars once harbored vast oceans that covered roughly one-third of the planet. Two long shore-like lips of rock in the planet's northern hemisphere were thought to be the best evidence, but experts argued that they were too "hilly" to describe the smooth edges of ancient oceans.

The view just changed dramatically with a surprisingly simple breakthrough.

The once-flat shorelines were disfigured by a massive toppling over of the planet, scientists announced today. The warping of the Martian rock has hidden clear evidence of the oceans, which in any case have been gone for at least 2 billion years.

"This really confirms that there was an ocean on Mars," said Mark Richards, a planetary scientist at the University of California at Berkeley and co-author of the study, which is detailed in the June 14 issue of the journal Nature. "

Your post makes no sense.  Did you mean to post this in another thread?

I read about this on another site a few days ago. It's great that you posted it here to give it some wider coverage.   I love reading anything about Mars.

This is great news. I have been following this stuff for a long time, how they keep looking for signs of water or life on Mars, its facinating.  Ok, my curious kitten side is coming out.

Thanks for the post Vendaval.

You guys are most welcome.  Astronomy has fascinated me for years,
still remember the grade school report I wrote about the planet Venus.  lol

The photography on the NASA site is breathtaking!
Reminds me just how small we are in the great big universe.

...actually, more to do with its lack of a large moon, which in our case stabilises our solar orbit.......mind you, never let real science get in the way of a good ideology.........

Dont forget the lack of a magnetosphere.  Mars is perpetually bombarded by cosmic rays that have nothing to stop them from microwaving the surface of the planet and screwing up it's climate.

Yep Sinergy, and it used to have a magnetic field.  Lost it about the same time it lost its oceans.

Well, you can bet that Faux News will insist it was Liberals who did it.

Sinergy

p.s.  I personally wonder if the loss of the magnetosphere had something to do with it, although my previous post was mostly in jest.  I was reading about our magnetosphere a few months ago, and some scientists were thinking we might be due for another pole flip sometime in the next 50,000 years or so.

......and as long as we stretch the definition of liberal to include 'planetary shifts of one sort or another along with bad damn cosmic luck', they'd be right.........

Last I read the thinking is the loss of the Martian magnetosphere was a symptom of the real problem. It appears that Mars does not have a molten core. When the core solidified, it is believed, is when the magnetic field disipated and obvioulsy when the planets plate tectonics stopped. The solar wind leached atmosphere away with no margnetic field to deflect it, this would include water vapor.

So in the space of a geologically short span Mars went from being warm and wet possibly not dissimiliar from Earth at the same time to being the barren dusty rock it is now.

Fast reply -

I did a quick search for Mars + magnetosphere + water and found some abstracts from the journal of the American Geophysical Union, circa 2005.  The 6th abstract listed discusses evidence of a crater lake on the surface of Mars.

So What ?
Does this discovery, mean the price of Rubarb will soar through the stratosphere? OR.....will bush invade, pre-emtively, strike to uncover the WMD's that the martians have hidden there, under their magneto covering of red stuff. Red stuff, !!!!!! they must be commie pinkos, the entire planet of Red Stuff taking over the universe. Is Mars.....The Red Planet, a base for some commie nation to overthrow US; not like China, where we embrace the commies;  Is there any oil there......if not; then it's of no interest to anyone. I think, ahem; we must establish a Mars Red Stuff department to oversee our national security and send investigative groups to search for WMDs and explore the fields , they think are oceans, for signs of oil deposits, since we have to be ready when we run out of fossil fuel in the next 20 years. And....the US should fund this for the safety of our world....it's an imperative, and we will rise to the occasion, no matter what the price.
