"Abbas dissolves Palestinian government"

By SARAH EL DEEB, Associated Press Writer
25 minutes ago

" GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - A beleaguered Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared a state of emergency and disbanded the Hamas-led unity government after the Islamic militant group vanquished its Fatah rivals and effectively took control of the Gaza Strip on Thursday.

Fearful that Hamas' momentum could spread to the West Bank, Fatah went on the offensive there, rounding up three dozen Hamas fighters. Angry militants threw office furniture out a third-story window of the Palestinian parliament building in Ramallah, then set fire to the office of three Hamas lawmakers. A Hamas activist was shot and killed in Nablus, the first person to be killed in the West Bank after days of violence in Gaza; the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent Fatah offshoot, claimed responsibility.

It was a day of major victories for Hamas and its backers in Iran and Syria
— and of devastating setbacks for the Western-backed Fatah. In one particularly humiliating scene, masked Hamas fighters marched agents of the once-feared Preventive Security Service out of their headquarters, arms raised in the air, stripped to the waist and ducking at the sound of a gunshot. "

As weird as this is going to sound, I'm really glad only one person died.

Vendaval -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 4:13:56 PM)

You did not read the whole article -  [:o]

"The violence has killed at least 90 people in the past five days, including 33 on Thursday alone. Witnesses, Fatah officials and a doctor reported executions by Hamas militants of defeated Fatah fighters Thursday; Fatah said seven of its men were shot in the head gangland-style. Hamas denied any such killings."

OrangeJulius -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 4:15:54 PM)

Oh, that's not good.

selfbnd411 -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 4:57:38 PM)

I blame this all on Israel--they started the 2nd Intifada in 2000 when the hawkish Ariel Sharon visted the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.  That triggered a wave of Palestinian attacks on Israel, who responded by destroying the moderate Palestinian government's security forces.  Then after all the moderate forces were dead or disarmed, Hamas stepped into the power vacuum.

Israel's response?  Bomb them some more because they're not able to control their territory.  Um, ya...it's kinda hard to control your territory when your police forces have been destroyed!

It's kind of like cutting someone's brake cables and then slapping them around for failing to stop at a stop sign!

Vendaval -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 5:38:02 PM)

So you are saying that the Hamas militants doing the killing are
absolved of any responsibility because of the  previous actions of
the Israeli military?

No, I'm saying that I blame the Israelis for starting this.  I think of Hamas as a wild dog on a leash held by the Palestinian Authority.  The Israelis shot the guy who was holding that dog back, and now it's doing what wild dogs do.  That doesn't mean Hamas is blameless, but it does mean that Israel is more to blame for being ridiculously short-sighted.

Pandamonum -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 5:50:21 PM)

If it was me, I would go back a hell of a lot earlier. If your going to blame Israel start with the number of refugees that were forced to leave because it was coming down around them and wound up in Lebanon. They really thought that they were coming home.  These people lost their property. Everything they owned and some kept the key to their house and the deeds that had been granted to them.  Only to find out that someone else was living in their houses.

selfbnd411 -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 5:56:16 PM)

Then we can blame England and France, because they're the ones who pushed for a mandate over Palestine during WWI:

I'm down with that.

cyberdude611 -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 6:21:04 PM)

This is an area of land that everyone wants for themselves. It contains places that are very critical to both Islam and Christianity. And people who are religiously driven would be more than willing to put their own lives on the line for the sake of their religion.

There is more than enough places to place blame in this mess. At this point, it doesn't matter. Peace has been elusive in that area of the world for over 1,000 years. And it really doesn't seem that we are moving any closer to peace.

The only question I have is who's idea was this. It is one thing if Hamas is acting alone on this. But if there is outside interference by say Syria or Iran....that will sound the start of a much larger problem that could lead to a complete regional war. And with Israel with nukes and Iran looking to get them.....this could get ugly down the road.

Pandamonum -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 6:36:15 PM)

WW3 or 4, depending on whose doing the counting, is already happening....now as we speak.
That IS.

I have seen tv video that shows Hamas with M16's.  That is our stuff.

Syria is a given. Iran is a given.  The whipping boy is the Israeli-Palistinian conflict. Syria and Iran are not as tight as one might assume.  They have a very touchy alliance.  The one thing that Iran might gain any type of support from the other Arab nations is that conflict.  Because prior to this, actually prior to the Revolution in Iran, the Mossad worked very closely with SAVAK.

The ins and outs of this baby can be overwhelming.

Pandamonum -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 6:38:13 PM)

We are talking about that alliance with Iran and Israel in the Iran Contra crap. It is deep.

Actually prior to, it had to do with moving Iraqi Jews into Israel. Sorry bout that.

While the problem with the region goes back 1000 or more years, the catalyst for the current meltdown was
described as being the US invasion of Iraq.

Seems like we are seeing the beginning of the worst case scenario.

Not surprising.

Zbigniew Brzezinski  is pure evil.  He is. That is a man that I despise.  Breaking the Soviet Union was everything.  It was worth it for him.

That depends on what your concept is of nation-state.  We are not talking about 1000 years.  These people did not and many refuse, which is the problem, lines that were drawn by those that occupy.  The United States has come to view the world through that which we recognize on those terms or boundaries.  The people themselves will not accept.

luckydog1 -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 7:24:59 PM)

Self bound so even though the Clinton "peace deal" (oslo and dayton) garunteed the right of everyone to go to thier Holy sites, it is ok for the Palestinians to reject the deal and start killing people because a jew exercised his right to worship?

Trying to figure out whether you are arguing with me or agreeing with me.

While the Fertile Crescent had a culture several thousand years ago, not much has happened over there in the past 1000 years that did not involve what amounted to tribal warfare and internecine fighting.  The age of Enlightenment passed the Middle East by.

The 20th century simply brought advanced weapons technology.

Whatever you have to say about the panel, at least they know and understand what is happening in the Middle East, as opposed to the Idiotocracy we have now.

I have several of Abbas's albums.

(Of course...some were better than others).

Pandamonum -> RE: "Abbas dissolves Palestinian government" (6/14/2007 7:37:23 PM)

To be quite honest, once his name was on the list...I discarded everything.

I am not denying the conflicts prior to. I'm just ......saying that if we go with your stance, we deny the effect of the last 100 years.  When we try to back up that far in history, to me, we negate the more recent actions that have the cause and effect that we see right now.  I won't do that.  We, as Americans, internationally and nationally, have lost our dignity and the only way to regain it is by accepting responsibility.

Also, there are an awful lot of contributions from that area that may not be welcome to the thinking of those of who have been brought up in the Western world.  The dark age is happening right now due to the level of extremism because of .........Brzezinski.

No argument here, Pandamonum.

I am not negating the past 100 years, or the past 1000 years, and I always disagreed with the idea of the US invading Iraq.

I imagine there are more people worthy of blame than Brzezinski, but he does know his stuff.
