Not sure if this is entirely the correct place - but it didnt seem like an off topic either.
The last couple of weeks here on CM forum have been pretty groovy on the whole.  There is always a certain 'flow' that occurs that is kinda noticable if you stay around long enough.  Things come in stages.
Yes, there have been the same ole 'complaining ' posts about not enough mail/toomuch mail/trolls/fakes/blaghblaghblagh (yes it is late here in Blighty[;)]) - however there has been a recent resurfacing of some really old posts due to new posters coming in and using the search feature (!shockhorror!) and making poor LA redundant by not asking for links.  And it was those posts I wanted to focus on.
 
I look back in complete awe.  I know I have definately 'grown' when I look back at these old threads (good grief I could cringe at some of which I posted) - some are 4 or 5 years back (showing our age huh).  Some of our insecurities showing and fascinating to see how people 'danced' back then.  Some old faces missed, but many still around - some under new names or profiles - all growing at not just tiny little paces, but huge great bounds and leaps.  And also how attitudes are changing in a really astounding way.  Contracts, safewording, abuse (which seems to be the buzz word at the moment) - all impacting the message board and yet the concepts of them and what is behind them seem (to me) completely different to todays understanding and 'in thing'.
 
I guess my thought is - we often advise people to go check thread and use the search facility.  But should we?  Or should we actually invest our time and rehash out some old standards in new light - instead of wasting it on pointlessly saying *use this search function*  - So many of the threads are quite outdated in reply even by todays standards - so as boring as it might be to see the same old subjects come up over and over in new threads - surely it is worth the effort to actually respond and not dismiss them which does two things - makes the OP feel pointless and in the way thus they may not post again and secondly just gives bad info from ancient eras (ok - so a couple of years isn't technically ancient but its still the past).

I do both.  It's part of why I like getting links- it refreshes me on old points made, AND gives me a change to get a new look on a topic.

Good point that ideas and thoughts progress and peoples ideas change and they grow in the process.  i have always felt it rather rude to tell an OP to go look up an old thread, it's the same as saying - we don't want to be bothered.  i mean how many new ideas to be discussed can come to light - every op can probably be researched and found somewhere by now.  If i find a thread not interesting or (to me) boring i just click on another one.  Sometimes i find them fascinating, but choose not to  post because i don't feel i have enough experience or knowledge to add anything worthwhile, but i read them and learn something new.

Actually it's extremely rare someone will tell someone to search for old threads and NOT also give updated advice.  Usually that happens when someone just asks for a "where is this link?"  or "How do I find" sort of one liner answer thread rather than a real discussion.

However, it's rather odd that people want perspectives, but somehow think the best and most thorough discussion will somehow happen to be produced by the few dozen people who read and manage to post when that thread is active.  What about the 6 threads over the past three years?  Wouldn't you want all of those, too?  We've had some great people give some really good discussions over the years and you won't find them here anymore.  I find it rude when people think we should give our time to answer THEIR request for discussion but don't want to put any energy into really looking at what's out there.

How can it be rude to come to a message board and expect to have SOME people want to respond to your questions? That's the point of a message board.

i think for the most part new people want interaction with others, they want to ask a question and know they can come back and respond, give more info, give more details etc. You can't do that reading old threads.  i do agree though that much can be gained by doing some research and maybe they do that before posting, but ask or post anyway.  i have gone reading old threads and after reading might have questions left in my head - i don't post because i feel it would be rude to drag up a 1 or 2 year old thread to rehash. The posters might not even be around anymore so what value would that be to me?

Um I never said that was rude.

I said it's rude to ask for and expect others to contribute to your thread, and then dismiss all the other great resources when they are given to you in response to asking FOR perspectives.

ok misunderstood what you meant. Anyone who would ask for something then just dismiss it out of hand isn't being very appreciative for certain.

But so many answers DON'T change. The sub/slave one, for example. Does it really matter if I gave my opinion as a definition of each 5 years ago or that I'm just as apt to say, "It depends on how you define them," now?

It seems that you're kind of implying that we were all wrong "back in the day" and what we feel and share today is totally correct. Of course, that's not so. So much of this is opinion based anyway...it doesn't matter if we have a seeminly more enlightened viewpoint now...someone else will have the same viewpoint we had way back when...and they'll speak up, too. *chuckle*

i think that life happens on these threads, vibrant, thriving exquisite life...ideas are born in the moment , sometimes still born, sometimes sickly, sometimes wailing at the top of thier lungs for attention and sometimes with a gentle soft smile on thier tiny faces.

life is why i am here.

ideas are the new life and the young ones here inspire that, and going to look at the old links just feel like playing shuffle board on the lido deck,  and do nothing for me.

I have to agree somewhat with LA, in so far as some posters from the past are no longer here, and with them went a wealth of experience and thought provoking advice..hence past and present can co-exist in a perfect balance.We all can learn much from the past,..faces may change but human nature rarely does..Tempting

I think there is a lot of good information in some of the old threads, especially on health and safety topics. I really appreciate LA giving the links.  I'm one of the ones who sometimes tells a person how to search for a topic because i think they can benefit from previous threads on their question.  My intent isn't for them to revive and old thread, but to have them read them for their own education.

Great thread and Your right the other day an old post came up in which I posted on under my older name the one I used befor I was owned and that made me curiouse so I did a search on my old name and started reading my old posts. even though the last of those posts was only made last august I was still looking at them wide eyed, I shared them with Master and we where both amazed and how much I have changed and grown in my views and such in the past year alone. a few times i was thinking "I said WHAT??" LOL

Since, I've been using the Message Board here.  I've grown and learned some new things!  Be it a few tips here and there, insight to different perspectives or whatever else.   I've tried to contribute things, be it my opinion, advice, perhaps a joke, perhaps a story from my life's vault.  There are things I've read that have made me laugh, want to cry, new revelations of understanding, and moments when I simply find myself rolling my eyes going Dugh!

I've seen a few cycles go round that the OP was speaking about.  Same old topic a month later.  I find that while the topic is old, the insight or postings about it are not.  I've always respected LA for being the sort of Librarian of the message board.  She often takes time to do the searches, or remembers a previous thread and shares this.   This way an OP gets to see what was previously talked about, along with any new insight or current comments.   The active message boards users come and go at times.   The beauty with interacting with current users is to be able to take it to the other side in email exchanges.

What I said was that I noticed attitudes have changed to certain activites or points, not that there was any 'wrongness' - and I find that really enlightening.  We all know how much attitudes have altered now than say - back in the 50's,60's,or 70's - but to see such a remarkable change in just a few years is really interesting to me.  The change and swings in attitude are a positive thing - there is far more acceptance in some of the edgy-er stuff and alot less condemnation for just 'being'.  Something that is mentioned alot is 'one true wayism' - yet when you look back on the older threads, I would suggest they show much more of that than we see now, or maybe it isn't more back then, just that at least no one 'stood up ' to it as much.  I believe this is a good thing and shows that people are becoming more and more comfortable in expressing themselves - not juston a BDSM slant, but other subjects also.  Old medical threads, threads on racial issues, and the politics threads in particular are far more noticiable now than a couple of years back.
 
And yes, there will always be people stuck in their ways and even those who look back and think that the 'old days' were better.  I don't know if I would go on to say that we as individuals are any more enlightened, but I do see much less of a sheep mentality.
