If you don't already have one, get a chew toy ASAP! More than one isn't a bad thing either.

A half hour or so after drinking and/or eating, take the pooch out to potty.

Belly and ear rubs will make the pooch love you. At least until you stop.

They're very good in a wok with some soy and snow peas.
Make sure you skin em or you'll be coughing up hairballs all night long.

A loud ticktock clock at night might help. Poor lil pup must be confused and lonesome. How long will you be sitting on the dog? What kind of dog and how old is it?
Most dogs are easy to care for, they just want attention.. food.. then more attention  .

Crying at the door is often a sign of needing to toilet. If uo're correct that it's seeking its owner, go with the suggestion about petting him, rubbing his ears. Belly only if he turns over.

Find a piece of cheese or a cracker or anything non greasy or too salty. See if she'll eat from your hand. That sometimes breaks the ice.

dogs love walks & it is a bonding thing for you to walk the animal

Don't just snap a leash on the collar & let them walk you where they want to go. You take the lead, let them walk where you want to walk. This will reassure the animal that you are security in their time of stress.

If the toy is a Kong (or something like it)... fill it with cheese. Poochy will be zen'd out for hours.

That is disgusting, shame on you.

Everyone knows hot mustard goes better on dog.

It's very kind of you to take this animal in your friend.  Whining at the door is a good time for a walk

Dogs communicate their needs differently than cats.  If it seems to be trying to tell you something, it is.  Potty, food, attention you can do something about, missing the Human, not so much.  A two-year old still has a puppy's outlook on life.  A little tug-of-war with a knotted old t-shirt might be good.

If it gives you any comfort, We leave our dog with my folks occasionally for over-night trips.  He loves visiting over there, enjoys playing with their dogs, but every time I leave him, he'll start giving them the little noises and big sad eyes that he wants to go home now.

Don't let it get away with growling at you EVER.  If it climbs into your spot on the chair or bed and growls, say NO in a sharp tone and push it down (if you think it will try to bite, a spray of water right into the face as you say NO sometimes works).

Several good walks a day will help a lot.
