It's very kind of you to take this animal in your friend. Whining at the door is a good time for a walk Dogs communicate their needs differently than cats. If it seems to be trying to tell you something, it is. Potty, food, attention you can do something about, missing the Human, not so much. A two-year old still has a puppy's outlook on life. A little tug-of-war with a knotted old t-shirt might be good. If it gives you any comfort, We leave our dog with my folks occasionally for over-night trips. He loves visiting over there, enjoys playing with their dogs, but every time I leave him, he'll start giving them the little noises and big sad eyes that he wants to go home now. Don't let it get away with growling at you EVER. If it climbs into your spot on the chair or bed and growls, say NO in a sharp tone and push it down (if you think it will try to bite, a spray of water right into the face as you say NO sometimes works). Several good walks a day will help a lot.
