"FBI says at least one million computers infected by 'botnets' "

Fri Jun 15, 3:55 PM ET

" WASHINGTON (AFP) - The  FBI is in the process of locating and notifying the users of one million computers controlled by hackers through automated crime networks or "botnets," officials said Friday.

Authorities announced this week three arrests in separate schemes to infect computers to allow them to be remotely controlled by malicious software, usually sent by spam e-mail.

FBI special agent Richard Kolko said "the vast majority" of the million computers were in the United States but added that "it's a global problem" and the US authorities have worked with partners from as many as 60 countries in the investigations.

"The majority of victims are not even aware that their computer has been compromised or their personal information exploited," said FBI assistant director for the cyber division James Finch in a statement.

"An attacker gains control by infecting the computer with a virus or other malicious code and the computer continues to operate normally," he said.

"Citizens can protect themselves from botnets and the associated schemes by practicing strong computer security habits to reduce the risk that your computer will be compromised."

The FBI said it had arrested three people in the past few weeks accused of being "botherders," controlling botnets of computers that can be used for identity theft, phishing, spam or other malicious activity.

Those charged included Robert Soloway of Seattle, Washington, the alleged "spam king" believed to be responsible for millions of spam e-mails.

Also, James Brewer of Arlington, Texas, is alleged to have operated a botnet that infected Chicago area hospitals and Jason Michael Downey of Covington, Kentucky, is accused of using botnets to send a high volume of traffic that might harm computer networks.

By infecting computers, hackers can create the botnets of "zombie" computers that can be used for additional attacks.

Maarten Van Horenbeeck, a security expert at the SANS Internet Storm Center, said the FBI effort to stem the tide of spam and hacking "should be applauded."

However, the impact of arrests on the "increasing botnet count remains to be seen," he added.
"In order to prevent these botnets from being taken over by foreign botherders, law will need to be aligned globally," he said.

The FBI warned computer users that it would not contact victims online, and said any e-mails suggesting this should be viewed with caution "because they could be part of a malicious phishing scheme attempting to exploit this issue."

just clickin

First line of defense is your ISP. Hopfully they have good security software but some. like mine, don't.

In either case make sure you have good security software in operation. Starting wth a firewall. I personally use Blackice http://www.blackice.com/PCProtection-Firewall.htm

Then I use AVG anti-virus which can be acquired for very little cost. FREE my favorite
price.

Viri rarely get through my firewall and when it does AVG catches it.

Occaisionally I run House Call, a free online virus scanner

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

that does it for me but for the more paranoid you can ad a Spyware and Adware
scanner to the mix. I just dump my cookies now and then and don't worry about it.

If a hacker trult wants YOUR computer there's little you can do but these guys are
looking for the easy mark. There are so many easy marks they don't need to spend
the time and energy hacking one computer.

1 million computers sounds like a lot but compared to the total number of computers
it's a drop in the bucket. It's ok to be concerned and take appropriate action but not
overly so.

Windows Firewall SOFTWARE running on the machine to be protected is ludicrous.

Go spend the fifty bucks for a real gateway/router, and put the firewall UPSTREAM from the PC to be protected.

Filter the ingress to the NETWORK, rather than wasting cycles on the PC, which can easily be subverted.

The #1 reason there are botnets?

People install untrusted software.

IF YOU CANNOT, YOURSELF, READ AND AUDIT THE SOURCE CODE, WHY WOULD YOU TRUST ANY PIECE OF SOFTWARE?

If the FBI knows more about my computer than I do, we have a serious problem.

Please, let's not be alarmist.  How many people can read the code for Microsoft Office?  Are you saying no one should use software they couldn't have programmed themselves?  That's absurd.

I would call that a case of serious boredom!

No-one should use software where your RIGHTS TO USE THAT SOFTWARE are artificially limited.

"FREE" as in Speech is the only way to go.

Which is why Microsoft is always playing Catch Up.

There's a REASON these botnets are constructed from Windows machines.

When the summer started, and school got out, I came back and set up this computer again. And realized it was full of viruses! I mean, hell, I'm pretty good with computers- but I had no idea just how bad it was until I looked into it. They didn't cause me any problems for a long time, so I never really considered it.

Glad to see legal action taken against such malicious individuals. It concerns me, that this might set precident for increased legal juristiction over the net. Still, in this case, I'm behind it. Strongly.

Because the vast majority of people use Windows? ;)

Alternative system fans love to point out how free of such malicious code their systems are.. often failing to realize that this is largely due to the limited targets that such worms would be confined to!

No, it's due the the fact that the O/S's in question, are *designed* from the ground up for multiuser and network security.

lsof -i shows me EVERY PROCESS connected to a port. It makes it easy to AUDIT the machine, for compliance with my policies.

Sure, there's a "Low Hanging Fruit" factor, but it's negligible compared to the architectural flaws Windows suffers from.

Maybe I don't consider having Win-Explorer magically restart when the windows box tanks instead of a blue screen to be any real "progress" or "innovation".

Windows sucks because it's ALWAYS had to play "Catch-Up-By-Committee" with the real innovators.
