A few thoughts..............
Take the over all condition in mind, then your attachment to it. 
Your going to be making a payment it seems one way or another. 
If it's really only wheels and breaks, fix it. 
Electrical issues are a whole nuther ballgame and a night mare at times. 

VW is making a model now with a diesel in it that's going 50mpg.
It's liked well by the few that have them, worth a look if your in the market.

A chipped out Duramax is sweet!  Not sure why your dropping so much fuel though
when your pulling unless that young hoof of yours weighs a couple hundred pounds.  [;)]

Every make and model have their quirks when they get a little age on um.
No different then us humans in that right...  what keeps us running is the same with them.
It's all in the maintenance.  I had a jeep that ran 200k before the pvc valve went without
warning.  Dropped another engine in it and the trans took another 50k before an accident
wiped it out or I would still be driving it.  (God I loved that thing)

I'm in the market myself right now for a new one, or at least new to me. 
I hate cars... omg how I hate cars...  but I work with them all day.
If your brand loyal, stay there... eventually you'll be an expert in your choice.
If not, ask around ... as you see, everyone loves to talk shop.  [8D]

I've been buying new since 1985.
An 85 Mercury Cougar, got rid of it in 1994 with 88,000 on it. Then a 94 Mercury Grand Marquis on a lease, bought it, sold it and made $2,000 because it was worth more than the residual value.
A 97 Ford F-150, 98 F-150 both Lariats , a 2002 F-150 "King Ranch" with 43,000 on it last may and my current vehicle a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis.
I generally keep them for 3-5 years and get rid of them before they need tires, brakes, shocks, batteries. All that stuff would run you $1,500-$2,000 on a big truck. And also while they still have good trade-in value.
When I was a young man I always had older cars so I figure in my middle and older age I'll treat myself to a new vehicle every few years.
I didn't mind working on cars when I was younger but now I have no desire to do so.
I'll probably keep this Mercury for 5 years or so. It rides great, gets good milage, has real comfortable leather seats and all the bells and whistles.

Now a ford truck is just getting broken in good around 15 to 20 years smile..Can afford to trade up every year but intend to get every mile out of of my truck and DIANE can do as she wishes..I am driving an 1985 f 150 have done  nothing except brakes tune ups and oil changes.tires...Next year it will be designated as a "farm truck".. MY daughter is a GM exceptive and says they are designed to wear out just after the warranties ..go figure smiles..bounty

OMG Popeye!  I cant imagine going that long without having to buy new rubber, breaks and so on.  I guess I drive way too much!

Quivver, I guess you do.
I'm retired so I only put about 10,000 miles a year on them or less.
The Mercury that I bought new last May has 8,900 miles on it.

Quivver, same here.

With putting in about 130 miles a day Monday thru Friday and whatever we have to on weekends........I have to buy alot of tires, oil changes and so forth. With this sort of driving I consider the daily driver disposable. Right now that disposable is a 2004 with 207K in miles. I would love to buy a hybrid but so far the math still proves out that ten thousand more dollars for car is not worth the gas savings. Besides the 2004 has been paid for for a year now. Granted she isn't the prettiest lil thing she once was.... dent on the right front thanks to a wild turkey and left front from a bump of a deer hiney. She has a cracked windshield and the paint is pretty chipped up on the front end from all the road debris...........but she is still dependable and gets good gas milage. When she ceases to be dependable then I start shopping. I have been eyeballing the Mazda Speed but we shall see when the time comes.

I don't drive a lot so my cars tend to last for years and years.  But once they start having problems that cause me to be concerned about breaking down in some out of the way place, it's time to get a new one.  I am a total blonde when it comes to fixing cars.

i've sold cars for a variety of reasons... One because i could finally afford a truck with air conditioning after 6 years in South Carolina... one was a $500 car that needed brake work, a radiator repair, and tires after 12,000 miles (still got $400 for it), one because it had been damaged in a flood, and even after being rebuilt, my wife didn't trust it anymore, and one because it just didn't WANT to run for me (ran fine getting on the trailer to go home, then wouldn't run- kept killing fuel filters. Replaced all of the fuel lines, dropped the tank and had it cleaned and lined, and discovered the radiator leaked. Had the radiator re-cored, and it spun a bearing. i sent it to the Netherlands)

i've swapped engines and transmissions to keep stuff on the road, but it all depends on what else is wrong with the vehicle, and how much i like it.

I am struggling with this decision.  My car will be paid off at the end of summer.  And it has 120,000 miles on it.  It's been a great car and the only complaint I've had has been some transmission work (and that was many years ago).  I really want to see how long I can make it last.  I want to live free of a car payment for awhile. 

But I long for a little Honda Accord.  sigh.

my best cars ever- was a 72 plymouth  aand a 75 duster. I paid $100 and $550.  oh- 2 Chevy celebrities were kick azz reliable!  87 and 89.

I do better with a solid used car. If I spent every $100 this way- id be rich.  instead of a PO tree fArMer, from  the rural yonder... lol

I don't buy new cars, only used.

I have a big Chrysler and would like to have something smaller, but I want so much not to have a car payment.  If my car lasts until it's paid off, I can't complain because I've not put much money into it.  My goal is to pay it off, then give it a birthday (read: tune up) and see how long it will last.

My employer just traded her Accord in, Katy, and it was a terrific car. She's in a new Tahoe now, and it left her on the side of the road the first week [>:]

Heck, I'd like a new Civic; they're roomier now, and look pretty nice.

My driveway is full of 'used' cars. Only one was bought new and paid off. Currently I have:

84 Caddy Coupe de Ville that my youngest is driving. (127k on it)
85 Merc Grand Marquis that my oldest is running around in. (140k miles.)
86 Buick Electra Stationwagon (Has a 350 racing engine in it...and yes I do take it out on the track when I have a day off.) (138k on this one.)
94 Dodge Caravan (the ONLY car I bought new and paid off). (140k miles.)
95 Honda Passport. (150k miles.)

All are in pretty good running condition. I have an amazing mechanic that takes care of them and doesn't charge me an arm and a leg to do so.

      The machine says there isn't a damn thing wrong with the alternator...  The little econo-box I was thinking about is new enough to be rare, so I have no idea what I'm going to wind up driving.

     I might just go see what I fall in love with and lease.
