felineone -> tattoo w/o the ink (6/15/2007 10:30:41 PM)

I noticed that there are a few people discussing tattoos on the boards, some are tattoo artists, so I have a question.
I do not want a tattoo, haven't ever found anything I'd like on me permanently, but I'm fascinated with the process. I wonder what would happen if I wanted to experience this process with out the ink?  Would there be permanent marks? I know it's essentially needle play but in a different way.
Thanks!

I have heard of 'saline' tatoos where inlue of ink, saline was used or something similar, it leaves an interesting mark; I remember reading about it on another site and they had links to pics of what it looked like. Kinda cool if you like needles or if you want a 'tatoo experience' without the ink.  Your body would just absorb the saline in time. Email me an I will see if I can find the link for you.

It would depend on the design and how vigorous the artist worked it. There is an inkless process known as etching that can lead to permanent marking, but it is my understanding that in order for it to be prominently visible the artist must really dig in, the lines must be thicker and the healing must be interrupted repeatedly. If you are just looking to experience the sensation of the needle and not have the artist work indepth, I don't believe it would be permanent.

You'll experience some slight bleeding, and some temporary (read: up to 6 months) marking, depending on how sensitive your skin is. As far as I'm concerned, your issue will more be finding someone who will do it, because most artists work exclusively with ink, and charge 50$ per hour and up. Besides, as much as you ask any one of us on the boards, the artist will be able to give you much more accurate info regarding prices, marking, dangers, pain, etc etc etc.

Many tattoo artists work with what you're describing.  It's called an inkless outline.  It's used in various situations during some tattoos, but mostly for specific types of shading (smoke, etc) that would look funny with an outline.  As someone else stated, most tattoo artists charge upwards of $50 an hour, so this probably isn't your most cost effective approach.  You could go to a studio and request this, just for the experience, but you would more than likely be charged their minimum tattoo price for the pleasure, which can run anywhere from $20 to $50.

In my experience, which includes a half-sleeve tattoo made up primarily of inkless outline, you shouldn't worry too much about permanent marks, unless your skin is very sensitive to scars, soft, or fair.  Basically, all it does is run the needle in and out of your skin without the ink to make a line of holes, which bleed, and give the artist something to go by without having to put a black outline around certain types of shading, which would make it look funny.  As an aside, inkless outline is significantly more painful than a normal tattoo with ink, in my opinion.  The needle is sufficiently lubricated by the ink normally, so lack of ink can equal more pain from the dragging of the needle.

Ohh I think I would want the picture at the end for the uncomfortableness it causes!!
Having said that I'm currently looking into having a U.V tattoo I saw some brilliant ones on a website but in my inital search for a local tattoist Ive found that they may not do them over here[:(]

You could also try henna.

UV tattoes are bit problematic, its stil debated as to how well they hold and how safe the inks are.

You can 'dry' tattoo, a lot of artists practice liek that after  moving on form pig skin and the like before trying on themselves.

The U.V. work I saw while working for my artist came out well, but there were a few complaints about allergic reactions and differences in healing, which can happen with regular pigments as well.  It was a fad here in the States for about a year, then quietly went away.

(Quick Reply)

I went to a lifestyle event in San Diego several months back where there was a booth set up and someone doing inkless tattooing. I had never heard of it and got to watch a woman have a beautiful design done across her chest and onto one breast. She said she'd had it done a few months previous (different part of her body, I believe) and had no lasting scars but other than that I don't know anything about the process.

Good luck,
cali
