Gay candidate for mayor challenges Dallas image
By Ed StoddardFri Jun 15, 8:33 AM ET

Is a city closely associated with cowboys, family values and social conservatism ready to make history by electing a man who is openly gay as mayor?

Dallas voters will answer that question on Saturday as they choose between Democratic party-endorsed gay candidate Ed Oakley and nonpartisan Tom Leppert in a run-off race to replace outgoing mayor Laura Miller.

If Oakley wins, he would become the first openly gay man to be elected mayor of a major U.S. city, according to the Gay and Lesbian Task Force, a Washington-based gay rights group.

What's that saying about, "steers and queers?"

Actually, it's kind of funny that in a city that is as conservative as Dallas can be, there is a fairly large--and mostly accepted--thriving gay community here.  There was just a big news article recently about Dallas becoming the gay capital of the Southwest.  So, we'll see if he can win.  If he loses, I suspect it is more that Dallas wants to go back to a more "Republican business-oriented" mayor after Laura Miller than the issue that Oakley is gay.  I guess we'll find out today.

did ya have to mention cowboys?!!  drool drool- ya can dress em up but ya cant take em no where!

i only seen TX changing airplanes Austin looked nice. being that the impression i have of Texans- i cant imagine living there. I would not want to live in GA, MS, LA, AL.

ild consider Alaska, Kentucky, Tennesea, Arizona, Michigan. and the Pacific northwest.

i love the cowboy gear. but notice "fashion' from the real deal. real cowboys get dirty and sweaty.

im sure a few  sheep have gotten penetrated too.  oops.

DALLAS - Choosing a wealthy retired businessman over an openly gay city councilman, voters elected Tom Leppert as Dallas mayor Saturday by a wide margin.

Capping a swift rise from political unknown to the top office of the nation’s ninth-largest city, Leppert won the most expensive mayoral race in Dallas history. He received about 58 percent of the vote in the final but still unofficial results of the runoff, beating Ed Oakley by more than 13,000 votes.
