Having seen a few posts on this recently and reading a few of the responses the question that came into my head was - what do people consider to be a long distance relationship? A few hours difference?  A time difference?  A state or county hop?

With no notice, if I couldn't get to him in less than two hours and it cost me more than $10, I would consider it long distance.

truesub4u -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 6:22:03 AM)

Distance runs alot of different ways for everyone.

And for me.. East Coast VS West Coast... was too great a distance for me apparently. Specially when things started getting all right and comfy (Or so I thought).  I just couldn't handle that amount of distance.

So I don't know exactly where the distance line is my cut off.  Perhaps if next time the distance can be better managed, I won't feel the same way about distance.  But untill that happens... the closer... the better... subject to change with out notice if the right one and I run across each other in the future.

I'm with losttreasure on this as well, 2 hours is my cut off point.  Anything beyond that is long distance.

Aneirin -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 6:28:07 AM)

An LDR to me is any distance where two people are apart without the means to get to each other.Not everyone has their own transport nor the funds to travel.

persiphone -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 6:34:26 AM)

My own personal view is i enjoy someone to be less than 2 hours away. I have had relationships that spanned across oceans. It worked for a while, but in the end you realize that sometimes fantasy can not always become reality.

fast reply - Chicago to Alexandria/DC type of ldr ...it's about a 24hr drive

and to add - it works perfectly for us

Hi,
I think this is great time. 2 hours. Driving. It really does seem reasonable. But then you have masters that will fly you. I think thats a bit scarey. I read to much.

Faramir -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 6:50:57 AM)

If it requires an overnight stay, then I consider it to be LD.

mstrjx -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 6:54:00 AM)

I really hadn't been in a relationship where 'every day' wasn't possible until now.  Even 'not under the same roof' sometimes required too much planning.

As it stands, my relationship is distanced by roughly 700 miles, when we're not together.  That's a pretty fair hike when people just don't pick up hitchhikers like they used to.

Yeah I'll go with 2 hours and impractical to see eachother during the week most of the time.

MsPayne -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 8:28:51 AM)

I agree with most, anything more than 2hrs travel time should be considered long distance.

MasterFireMaam -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 8:51:59 AM)

Any distance that means we can't easily visit each other. For some, that's 200 miles. For others, that's 2000 miles. I'd say that for myself, something greater than a four hour drive is long distance, but, if they live 30 min away but are so busy with life/work, if can FEEL like and LDR even thought it's not.

I wasnt going to post because,I normally dont do long distance.
But right now I have been talking with someone in North Dakota.
I live in Maine so thats long distance as its a two hour time difference.If it hadnt gone well the 1st few chats,it wouldnt still be happening.

greeneyes1962 -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 9:04:47 AM)

for me, long distance is anything i couldn't comfortably drive to within an hour or two.

I am on the west coast, and Master in on the east coast. After a few delays, i am projected to move closer (within an hour) in September.

taintedgypsy -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 9:07:12 AM)

I do not think there is any hard and fast answer ... it can change not only from one person's point of view to annother's; from one relationship to annother but it can also change within a relationship when circumstances change.  This relationship started with us on opposite sides of the country and yet when I moved to the same state as him ... about a 2 hr drive away, I saw him more often yet I felt futher apart. Now I am back on the other side of the country again temporarily and we are reconecting and feeling close again. I really feel that head space, attitude and the state of your own life can have a lot to do with how you percieve distance.

slavegirljoy -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 9:25:41 AM)

This is so true!  i have lived within 20 minutes of men i was involved with, who were so busy with working overtime and trying to cram the rest of life's needs into what "free time" they had, that they might as well have been on another planet from me.  i was sometimes lucky to see them even once a month, although we would talk on the phone every could of days, or so.  i sure am glad those days are over for me.

Stephann -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 9:50:05 AM)

Rather than focus on actual distance, I'll put it more in terms of the difficulty or likelyhood of being able to see each other casually.  I dated a girl who was an hour and a half away.  We saw each other most weekends, talked often on the phone, and could easily visit the other for the evening if there was something special (concert, dinner, etc.)  I didn't consider it long distance at all.  A different girl lived an hour away, but visits were infrequent, contact was mainly through the internet and phone, and there was never a sense that she wanted anything more substatial.  Because the relationship was so heavily based on the phone and internet and she regularly balked at visiting in person, I considered it to be an LDR.  It also didn't survive past a month.

The real crux of LDRs are that they usually suggest an inability to be 'casual' because of some other life aspect (work, children, school, etc.)  There's usually some set condition that, once met, the relationship is expected to become more intimate (finding a new job, a larger house to accomodate children, finishing a degree.)

MJ lives about 3 hours south of me, thats LDR to both of us. For me, if it takes me longer than my nornal drive across down in traffic, its logn distance, so about a 45min to hour drive or longer would be long-distance.

mythi -> RE: .LongDistanceRelationships. (6/18/2007 10:07:22 AM)

For me I would consider any distance that would make seeing each other every day difficult to be long-distance.  Now if the person lived an hour from me, but commuted to work near me such that we could have lunch or I could get a hug every day before they headed home...I wouldnt necessarily consider that long-distance.  But when it comes down to it I'm a live-in kinda girl.  I'm very tactile and anything less always leaves me unsatisfied.
