LadyEllen -> Bernard Manning dies (6/18/2007 11:37:18 AM)

Its been reported tonight that UK stand up comic Bernard Manning has died.

For those who have no idea who he was, he was an overweight, ugly, common as muck, beer swilling northerner, renowned as the most racist, sexist, homophobic comic on the circuit, though later in life he opened his own club. Not The Nine O'Clock News featured him for a brief moment with the story that he had farted, reporting it to have been a major disaster.

And he was good. The PC brigade railed against him, yet his gigs and his club were just as popular with ethnic minorities, women and the LGBT community as with anyone else - because he was funny, even when one was the object of his humour. Yes, on one level he was horrendously offensive, but one always perceived that it wasnt seriously meant in that way. He was the last bastion against the over sensitive foolishness we find ourselves surrounded with.

RIP Bernard, you fat bastard.

We need more people like that!
Anyone who gives "political correctness" a good hard slap in the face is alright by me.
Lady Ellen, is it illegal in England to "offend" someone yet?

...not while Prince Philip lives there wont be.....

Politesub53 -> RE: Bernard Manning dies (6/18/2007 1:58:09 PM)

Popeye there was a recent case where a shop owner had a toy doll, a golliwog to be precise, among the shopfront display. The local police went to visit him about a racist offence. If it wasnt true it would be laughable. i am expecting a knock on the door for even typing the word and posting it on the net.

So the short answer is yes, the PC brigade are alive and kicking in the UK [;)]

He was one exceptionally shit comedian. Absolutely woeful. 'Shouldn't have been let out of his front room.

Is this like the light infantry, or what?

Who in fuck's name are the brigade?

Well let's see what we've got in the way of comedy tonight - oh, Bernard Manning - he's been in the way of comedy for years....

and no, I'm not in the least PC - I despise it - but a massively overweight bloke exhibiting zero intelligence and relying on offensive racial stereotypes to get any laughs at all - what are we supposed to make of that?

Spot on. About as funny as a kick in the cock, or Chubby Brown.

LadyEllen -> RE: Bernard Manning dies (6/18/2007 2:58:04 PM)

The problem with telling jokes is that theyre no longer funny, when one has to explain them.

If Bernard Manning was so racist, homophobic and sexist, then why so many sold out appearances and why the popularity with those supposedly the butt of his jokes? Where were the police? Because sure as anything he'd have been arrested multiple times and charged and prosecuted with no difficulty whatsoever.

Now, if you didnt like his brand of humour thats a different thing. Personally I cant stand Chubby Brown but many rave about him, and then there's that fucking Mr Blobby thing - what the hell is funny about that I dont know.

Ba eck! Bernard Manning's popped 'is clogs as he?

Even though he came from t'wrong side of the Pennines, he was a brilliant comedian who called a spade a .... gardening implement. He was funny because he told it like it was.

He had his critics, more noticeably since the 1980's when things started becoming PC, when we got 'alternative comedy', when British comedy stopped being funny and the Americans took our sitcom formulas and made them even funnier. Yes, Bernard Manning came from the North (nowt wrong with that, I'm from West Yorkshire), he was overweight, rude, and not the most handsome, but... he was a true professional, brilliant at one liners (and here, apart from Bob Monkhouse, he had few equals), had excellent timing, and was a heavyweight among those of the Working Mens Clubs circuits. How many of us can remember The Comedians TV show on Granada TV with the Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club?

Popeye, yes, we still have the PC Brigade, we have 'hate crimes' and you can be served with an ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour Order) if you offend someone.

I spent my teenage years in Bradford, which has arguably more Paki shops per head than anywhere else in the UK (shops owned and run by Pakistanis), which themselves were a revolution when it came to small shops, they were open longer hours, at weekends, and even during Bank Holidays, and along with curries, tandoori chicken, and such have become part of British society and culture. My home in Bradford was in Manningham, where mainly Pakistanis lived and during one year at school I was one of two white children in a class of 33 children, there was one black child and the rest were Pakistani. Nobody took offence at the term.

But now? I would be branded a racist. However I'm not racist, not sexist, and I'm not PC either.

A TV show which I would recommend is Little Britain, which also isn't PC.

As a playwright myself I'm not PC, I refuse to be PC because comedy is meant to be funny, not PC. And in my opinion when the PC brigade took over that's when British comedy stopped being funny.

Bernard Manning had his critics, it isn't my favourite sort of humour (I'm a diehard Spike Milligan fan), but Bernard Manning was good at what he did, he was professional, and he could pack the crowds in.

This is why the news of Bernard Manning's death is especially sad and why he will be sorely missed by a great many people in the UK.

Stella - I just thought how damned funny it is, that we two - who would no doubt be the butt of many a Manning joke, are about the only ones sad at his passing.

Funny old world.

I agree with you, LadyEllen.  The problem I have with people who dislike his humor is that it is rather ironic on a BDSM website.

His humour may not have been your humour, but it seems to me that we should honour his ability do his thing, because he and other people do enjoy it.  In the same sense that while something may not be your kink, that is no reason to ostracize the practioners of it.

This is what I was thinking. Yes we would, and so would others, but that was his style and his repertoire of subjects was just as wide as any other stand up comedian. I find Roy Chubby Brown quite frankly to be a poor imitation, and as for 'alternative comedy' I'm sorry, I don't quite see what's funny.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Bernard Manning dies (6/18/2007 3:27:18 PM)

Sensitive old pseudo intellectual that I am I couldn't possibly agree that he was the least bit funny but the mere fact that he was non PC is enough for me to say Good on ya Bernard.
For those who have never heard of him, you haven't missed a thing !!!!

He used to sing with the OSCAR RABIN band so I assume he had got a cut where it counts lol As have I boom boom

Probably, Ellen - because people find it easy to laugh at themselves, but feel unable (because of the pc police) to laugh at others at the risk of being 'insulting'.
Personally, he wasn't top of my comic list, but the man was a genius.  If he wasn't then way was he sold out and in demand?  I still feel his passing is a loss.

Hey and NG -Brown is ok - Jethros better....[;)]

I think thats a fair point; I seem to remember the stunned silence when that Muslim woman comedian came on stage somewhere (dont recall her name) and started ripping on her culture - and there's a Sikh guy (sorry, not good with names!) who does the same and maybe he got the same reception at first? No one seems to know whether its OK to laugh?

Of course its OK to laugh! Its only when a certain boundary is crossed - when it becomes about ridiculing a group with the object of generating hatred, that its not funny any more, and most of us are intelligent enough to know when that point comes. I guess the PC stuff is useful though, in that over half the population are too dumb to be allowed to play with fireworks?

Stella, and just which "race" are Pakistanis?
There's only three races, Caucasoid, Negroid, Mongoloid.
