i don't know how well this will work for anyone else, but i have had both leg and back problems (the back being worse, possibly permanent, i've spent time in a chair). Yoga done regularly (in my case about an hour a day) has helped me a great deal with both. This is especially true with kneeling, which can often be felt in the whole body. In the worst situation, i can now simply shift the weight from back to front or side to side to ease the strain. It also makes for a graceful rise out of the kneel because thigh and core muscles become stronger. The half-lotus, lotus, and camel have all worked well to alleviate any pain while sitting "criss-cross applesauce" (well, :D, i am Indian and not many Indian women of whom i know do sit cross-legged, even during ritual). i also tend to kneel with the backs of my feet flat to the floor. i have read that that blocks circulation, but i find it a lot easier. If i turn my ankles out a bit and my toes in my endurance is significantly better. Hope that helps. :)
