Kindred2Evil -> RE: What is it the forum post/ grammar nazi's out there get out of correcting others? (7/1/2005 2:32:50 PM)

Oh my goodness, someone break out the waterhose! If I make a mistake typing, deal with it. I get such a kick out of this kind of thing. I have this mental image of someone so bloody obssesssssed (oopsy, typo) with the way a bunch of internet people think of them typing up their posts in Windows, running spell check then cutting and pasting it into a reply here it gives me a giggle. (ooh run on sentance).
What's the big ole friggin deal? I rarely get steamed over things here, and if you can't take criticism then see the above and follow instructions.
Get over yourselves. It's like talking to someone face to face and they mistakenly say one word while meaning another, are you going intereupt and correct them? Spelling nazi's (ooh oh I said a hot button word there) just GET A LIFE (lookee all caps). If you have nothing better to do than critique and correct postings here, it makes one wonder...Outside of the net what sort of life do you have?

Not corrected no edited and don't really give a shite. (working on my cussword usage [:D]

Now that people are piping up about 2257 on the other thread, I don't see kenin over there saying they are being "chicken little" and whatnot -- and these people aren't a member of any "clique" that he claims supports me. Odd that he quieted down on the topic completely. He should be over there educating those people.

Precisely why I bowed out. Funny other people apparently did not get the message. It is not worth continuing.

Sir Kenin,
Far be it for me to instigate - (I RARELY DO!), but can you explain how if your intent was to use the old English word "couthe" in the above sentence under the definition "known" how it applied?

It would read then, "I point out that they lack class in their insults, or 'known'. Or is the sentence out of context? From your source; "Couthe is related to uncouth, meaning having bad manners, being rough in behavior. The negative form originally meant unknown in the sense of unfamiliar, to describe someone’s bad behavior in polite company." But standing alone the old definition would be implied wouldn't it?

Point of information: I am the WORLD's WORST speller. I hide behind the crutches of computer generated spell checking. As a consequence my spelling has gotten progressively worse. But as I said to my kids growing up, much to the chagrin of their mother, "If god intended us to spell he wouldn't have invented spell checking!" Now the problem is context and grammar. Quick self edits result in the brain reading the word as intended NOT as it appears. Subsequently I KNOW I've missed the correct use of their/there, site/cite/sight, and many more. It just proves my ignorance isn't limited to the content of my posts.

Couthe is the old english spelling of the word couth, which My first link aptly points out. Truth be known, I made a spelling mistake, but the forum nazi, rather than getting his facts straight, decided to attack Me on it. He then tried telling Me that couth is not a word either. His attack was that it was not just a spelling mistake, it was not even a word.

Clearly he does not know what he is talking about, but he is too wrapped up in himself to admit it. Funny, being a spelling/grammar/forum nazi at all he does not even know what he is talking about to attack someone. Everybody with a few grains of intelligence knew what I meant because the context I used it in clearly indicated the intended meaning.

He just does not have a clue. It is a joke.

Lordandmaster -> RE: What is it the forum post/ grammar nazi's out there get out of correcting others? (7/1/2005 4:14:32 PM)

Kenin, even this is totally wrong. "Couth" means "known." You insist on spelling it "couthe," which is your right, I suppose, but it's not accepted in that form by any modern dictionary. It's like writing "public" as "publique" or "publike." At one time, that may have been acceptable, but it's not anymore.

Now you're insisting that what you wrote is OK because "couthe" is supposedly Old English--but that's only in the sense of "known." "Known" is an ADJECTIVE. The use of "couth" as a noun isn't attested before the eighteenth century. (Edited to add: One thing I'll concede is that I learned this as a consequence of YOUR post. I did not believe that "couth" could be used as a noun, and I think the attested examples are deliberately humorous--from a time when educated people still knew the origin of the word.) Anyway, it's not ever spelled "couthe" as a noun.

Won't you just drop this? You misspelled the word. You were insulting people. I like to point out when people make mistakes while they're in the process of insulting people. End of story.

Actually, if it makes him feel happy to be wrong, even in light of the dictionary definition I posted, let him think what he wants. For the life of Me I can not figure out, with so many more important things in life to worry about, why I am sitting here having a battle of wits with an unarmed man. It hit Me last night while I was up in Collingwood. Why do I waste My time with such stupidity? I am as much at fault as he is. [:o]

WHY in the hell do people think it's their right to take others to task about if they're grammatically correct.

I dunno... I suppose because they are bored and feeling vicious. Online forums are a bit like high school in that respect.

For the millionth time, that's a definition of "couth." It's not a definition of "couthe."

For the thousandth time, you told Me that it was not a word at all and insulted Me for it, demonstrating very clearly that you had no idea what you were talking about right from the get go. you just like hearing the sound of your own voice insulting others by being a forum nazi. For the millionth time, as posted in My first link in My first post in this thread, it is the same word and for the billionth time I told you I made a spelling mistake and for the trillionth time you tried telling Me that neither one of them was a word, then you tried telling Me it was an adjective, not a noun and then you tried telling Me I made a grammatical error, not a spelling mistake.

It is not your business to correct Me. What is it that makes you think that you have that right? Who died and made you forum god? I could care less if I heard another nonsensical thing that fell out of your trap. If I feel like having some child following Me around correcting what very few spelling mistakes and/or grammatical errors I make, I am sure I can find plenty. If I want to hear your nonsense I will ask for it.

Enough. I am walking away, and you can babble on like a fool if you want to. The truth did not stop you in the other thread, there is no reason to believe it will stop you here either. In the future, however, feel free to redirect your foolishness to a more willing audience.

Good day.

Kenin, I ADMITTED that I didn't know "couth" was a noun:
