39 Yankee's, 'cause Lou Gehrig was there. [:D]

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Vote for the best baseball team of all time! (6/19/2007 9:54:03 PM)

you mean the 1908 Chicago Cubs ...and they will never see another World Series again either - it's that damn goat curse on the northside.

being a Southsider, i root for my guys in black and white - Chicago White Sox however their best year (besides 2005) was 1959 during the Go-Go White Sox days even though losing to the Dodgers.

No one beats murderers' row. Back when the bats were heavier, there were no steroids, and pitchers pitched double headers to the ball went slower to have guys that could hit like that was ridiculous. Maris and Mantle were great. One of Mantle's moonshots was the closest any ball had ever come to leaving Yankee Stadium and everyone knows Maris. Joe D in my opinion was the best overall ballplayer that ever lived. But the teams as a whole can't compare to the '27 Yanks. What about the '84 Tigers though? They should have at least been nominated lol

Lordandmaster -> RE: Vote for the best baseball team of all time! (6/19/2007 10:41:47 PM)

No, I mean the 1907 Cubs.  They were better.  You can look it up.

And Mikal: Lou Gehrig was on the '27 Yankees, not the '39 Yankees.

I certainly considered them, but after their amazing 35-5 start, they were just 71-51 the rest of the way.  One of my criteria was that the team had to have at least a .667 winning percentage, and preferably .700 or above.  Also, they weren't even the best team in the '80s.  That honor has to go to the 1986 Mets.  So if you're not even the best team in your decade, how can you possibly be the best team in history?

But if there's a huge clamor for the '84 Tigers, I'll add them to the list of choices.

Well they are considered by quite a few to be one of the best teams in baseball. The '86 Mets, that World Series was great. Buckner could barely stand the way his legs were and you send him out to play defense? I've never seen any sense in that lol. BTW Gehrig was on the '39 Yankees...he just rarely played

Lordandmaster -> RE: Vote for the best baseball team of all time! (6/19/2007 11:06:13 PM)

Well, yes, he played eight games in April and then realized his playing days were over.

Sorry brother.....

I'm a SF Giants fan back in the day of the ''Say hey kid'' - The vivid memories as a ten year-old purchasing packs of Topp's cards--with bazooka gum-- with every bit of allowance and lawn-mowing money, hoping to get lucky and land a coveted Mays,McCovey or Marichal card, are days that will never be forgotten.

And even though they played like shit at the end....I also liked them during the days of the ''Bay Bridge Series'', with heartfelt preformances from Dave Dravecky--during the pennant drive-- and the ''Hac man.''

Lordandmaster -> RE: Vote for the best baseball team of all time! (6/20/2007 12:38:42 AM)

Well, I considered them too, but remember that those Giants won only ONE World Series.  It was in 1954, when they beat a team that everyone thought was better than they were.  That was the famous 1954 Cleveland Indians, 111 wins and all.  Of course, the Giants swept'em.  But I still think you can't be in the running for the greatest team of all time when you were expected to lose the World Series that year.

The best Giants team ever was the 1905 squad, but I had so many teams from the aughts that I decided against including them.

I voted for the 27 Yankees. I read once, they could be down 8 runs in a game and not even be worried if they had 4 innings left.

Ya.. [&:]...oops, my bad. I did vote for the 1927 Yankees... but I was arguing against the 1939 Yankees (that's what I get for asking someone else's opinion [:D]). I guess the number just stuck in my head and escaped through my fingers... *grins*.
