On the rare family vacation while growing up, the parents took me and my sister to Niagara Falls Canadian side when I was 11 yrs old. Recall having a great time and went up the Skylon Tower at night though I was deathly afraid of heights.

Every summer there was a vaction. And it would consist of fishing camping and swimming. Low cost... family together... lots of fun. We opt for a time at Walt Disney World in Fla.. that was a total flop... I had chicken pox...and no one had a good time. So we all opt to keep up the camping and fishing from then on....LOL

I was pretty little, probably around 7. We took a cross country driving trip ( dear god, four girls all trapped in one car). I, being the ever helpful child I was made sure to help daddy by scooping up all the change he strangely left after every meal. I had no idea that these piles of money were tips.

I also took this opportunity to get lost in the great redwood forest. To this day I SWEAR there was a little boy that I followed and played with, tho he was never missing/found.

Since it was an educational trip my father pretended the car broke down in Death Valley so that we could 'understand' the sheer willpower it took those that originally traversed that bit of lovely land. That part ended up with four hysterical girls sobbing for a 'real' bathroom hahaha.

I wish I had been a few years older because those are my only memories from this particular trip. Dang it I can see still, that boy in the woods that I played with and eventually followed into the redwood forest. Weird.

My parents used to take us to Florida every year.  I hated it after a while, but we still went.
When I was 12, we went to florida, as usual. I hated flying, so we took the Auto Train out of Virginia. On the train, becasue of a technical malfunction, I manager to trap my ankle between 2 cars (fun!) and it was a very severe sprain that they were shocked didnt break. I spent the vacation in a wheelchair.
Wait! You said best, right! Wait, its coming.  This was by far the best vacation ever.

We went to every amusement park, and becasue I was in a wheelchair we got right on and right off, no lines. Every other year, we had to factor in the long lines to the park going and we aleays missed half the rides in the park becasue we didnt have time. We hit EVERY roller coaster in Busch Gardens in one day. Same thing for Universal Studios. We managed to see the majority of Disney World, everything in MGM, and I got to spend an extra day in EPCOT.  I was in my glory.

And even better, youd be surprised how really nice wpople will be to you if you are in a wheelchair. I got myself trapped in a gift shop, the wheelschair didnt maneuver quite as wel as I had hoped and I got jammed between shelves. I was rescued by Ric Flair (The wrestler, for those who dont know him) and he asked me if I would like a picture and an autograph when we actally got outside. I also met a few other famous people who hapened to be out and about with their families that day. You wave, and say hi and dont ask for anything and they tend to be really pleasant. OK, so I had to skip the water park, but I hated going there anyway so I didnt even feel guilty begging out of my fathers favorite attraction. All around the best vacation ever... and I was out of the wheelchair a few weeks after getting home, so I got an extra few weeks off from work without losing tons of money from it (temporary disability) and Amtrak was very god to us to make sure we didnt sue.

Who knew hurting your ankle could be so advantageous?

DV

wow, that is a little strange, isn't it?  makes you wonder if you were seeing a spectre of a boy that really did get lost...

cjenny -> RE: Favorite Vacation when You were a kid? (6/20/2007 9:20:23 AM)

It is something that I have always wondered about and never forgotten. My family says no way could he have been there but I also know that there is no way I would have wandered off alone.
I can still see him, tow headed wearing shorts and a yellow tshirt with sandals on.

Our family went camping in a place called, or near, Jones Falls in Canada......It was a converted farm for camping....absolutely beautiful..right on the river.  Although there was the one summer that 5 buffalo escaped from an adjoining farm.....they sent one guy in a truck to round them up....OMG!!!  talk about hysterical!   Then there was the year my wussy sister stuck her head out the flap of the tent at the bottom, and came face to face with the raccoon that was swiping our food at night....I think she woke the whole campground!  And she also got attacked by a turtle that had taken up residence in the swimming pond..came over from the river.....she is NOT the outdoorsy type...totally girly....and I was evil enough even then to really appreciate the humor in her misfortune!  Every year we went, there was always some form of wildlife that located us for breakfast food...one year, it was a pair of chipmunks that loved froot loops...they'd sit on a stump and holler til we gave them some.....then the family of woodchucks that loved pop tarts and veggies....they'd waddle right over to the table and wait for the goodies....cheeky little buggers!

This place had the only hand operated lock system left in the US and Canada....it was so cool to watch the staff get the boats thru the locks...only took about 15 minutes.  Also a huge fish hatchery...we'd go buy bread and feed them for hours.....the place was great!

growing up military, our vacations revolved around visiting bases while my dad was attending conferences or training however there were moments when we would drive to PA to visit relatives there.  i love spending time with my uncle because he lived on a mountain (before developers built the half-million dollar homes).

Hurling on my father and whoever else was around (was it just the two of us?) on the teacups after a big breakfast at Disneyland when I was 8.  It was a bad morning, I guess.

Only went on two trips as a kid.  Made up for it later on by spending 200+ nights in hotels for 10 years straight.

These days, taking a vacation to stay at home is the life.

It was just my mom and I, so there wasn't a lot of money.  I think my favorite ones were the ones we made down south.  It was only to TN, but I loved it there.  It helped give me a love of history and of the old houses I still enjoy going to today.

My dream is to someday move down that way, buy some land with a few horses, and just live out my life in the southern country.

Favorite vacation was the several times we would go to northern Minnesota. the fishing was great but my fav part of it was late at nite, laying back on a picnic table by a camp fire and looking into the sky and watching the northern lights

My favorite was visiting My aunt in California and going to Knott's Berry Farm.
It was scientific fun where two people of different heights could stand on each end of a concrete slab and look the same size, water ran uphill, and I sat in a chair up against the wall and off the ground. It wasn't secured but stayed up!
We went to Disneyland too but I don't remember much of it.

When I was 13 my brother died in a car accident with a drunk driver and my dad had a major heart attack and almost died.  So that September, my parents thought that it would be 'good for me' to go on vacation.  Me, my parents and my Grandma went to So. Cali.  We hit Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and Universal Studios.  It was a blast!!  But the 'worst' memory was that my dad and I WERE going to go on Montazuma's Revenge at Knotts Berry Farm.  We sat in the front.  I FREAKED OUT.  I started screamming and crying.  It was terrible.  The attendents finally let us out, before the ride started.  It is one of the things that I remember clear as a bell.  (Haven't rode on a rollercoaster that turned upside down since)

It is not uncommon for 'ghosts' of children to stay where they died.  (have you seen the movie 'Dark Water'?  It address just this notion)  Have you ever looked up any old articles about missing children in the area.  I would not be suprised if you found something.  Children are most likely to see 'ghosts' because they are more open to the energies that 'ghosts' give off.

No.. it never occured to me that I could research it. Hmm. I would have to ask my family for the location of the 'Jennifer wandered off again' incident but I think I may try.
I did have imaginary friends but I always knew they were just that.. imaginary. Thats why I've always wondered about that boy & convinced he was not imaginary.

When i was a kid, there was this box in the corner of my room, my rock'em
sock'em robots came in it and somewhere along the way i hung on to it.

Though i was always tall, i was also lanky and flexible enough to be able to
climb inside that box, fold myself up, close the top, and breathe ever so quiet
that no one should hear me.

i used such for those moments when Mother had been drinking and was in an
especially sadistic mood. Came in handy also when the older ones were dead
set on pubescent horndog exploration. Those whom visited the household with
ulterior motives in their special little grins, often found frustration as i could
disappear in the blink of an eye.

Sooner or later i would have to emerge from my little hideaway, face the music,
pay the piper, and ultimately submit to the requirements of the day or night.
i never told anyone, always swore i was just around the corner, playing by
myself, and no one was the wiser.

Each birthday or Christmas, i would try and pick something that simply arrived
in a big box, no matter the content, that was always secondary, it just needed
to fit the purpose, an escape from the world around me.

We were not exactly poor, but certainly couldn't afford a real vacation, off to
places that came only of nightly dreams. A mountain picnic was a thrill of thrills.

But then there was my box, a paradise without parallel, the ultimate get away of
get aways, calm, serene, safe and secure. A little piece of heaven right there in
the corner of my room, better than Disneyland, a crashing ocean, a towering
castle or a sunny tropical island. Inside, i could travel in peace to any destination
my little heart desired, any place but the place outside the box.

Respectfully, chia* (the pet)

Usually drove to NC, sometimes continued on to PA to visit family, always stopped at Disneyworld either coming or going.  And still to this day I love NC.  Very fond memories of hiking, fishing, waterfalls, panning for gemstones, horseback riding...even played my first miniature golf game in Maggie Valley, NC.
