It has been years since I was really into sci-fi, but I find myself looking for some good authors in this genre. I've read most of David Eddings (got tired of them), don't like Piers Anthony, McCaffrey is good, and Lackey is excellent. So....any suggestions? Who are your favorite sci-fi authors?

Thanks for the suggestions in advance.

best regards,
fate

Have you read ALL of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonrider of Pern books? There are alot of them! I thoroughly enjoyed them all... they should make movies of at least some of them! What a franchise that would be!

Sincerely tho,
Ron

~George R. R. Martin
~CS Freidman (all of her stuff is Sci Fi except the Coldfire trilogy, and all of it is good)
~Ursula LeGuin,
~some of the good Heinline (_Friday_ _Glory Road_ etc)
~Niven and Pournelle,
~Niven on his own.
~Azimov, of course (honestly, though, I'd stay away from the Foundation series, I hated them.)
~William Gibson (don't start with Neromaner, though, I found that I liked it a LOT better after I got a hang of his universe.)
~Bradbury (especially his short stories.)
~Orson Scott Card, but NOT the "Memories of Earth" series. It sucks.

Hrm. I could probably come up with more, but there's some stuff at least :)

I'm a sci fi freak, obviously.

Defiantly Bradbury. I've read the Martian Chronicles so many times it's not even funny.

I’d suggest Heinlein too. Read Starship Troopers, and weep at what the movie came out as. Stranger in a Strange Land is also quite outstanding. He’s also got a fair pile of pulp fiction, which while not exactly classy intelligent writing, is still fun to read (then again I’m basing my opinions on books like “Have Spacesuit, will travel” which I read in 10th grade...)

Don’t rule out Vonnegart if you can take stranger stuff. Slaughterhouse 5 is just downright trippy and Player Piano made me fear machines for about a week.

Card is good, I liked Ender's Game and the rest of that series, but I haven't read the rest of his stuff.

Infidel! For that comment you will suffer!

Umm, I mean, you're entitled to your own tastes and interests, and the fact that you don't appricate what I take as excellent bits of literature is just spiffy.

Please, please! Read "Callahans Crosstime Saloon" by Spider Robinson. If you can't it in your local book mega store, it's also available as "The Callahan Chronicles".

Go ahead, I'll wait...

...

...

Now, wasn't that good? :) You have about 7 books more to go!

Thank you all so much! I'm going to print out a list and take it to the local book exchange. This should keep me busy for a week or two <grin>
