I was posed a question by someone who I've been giving advice to regarding BDSM. She wanted to know how to modify an existing non-locking collar into one that could be padlocked.

Frankly, I'm stumped for now. Though I am also exhausted. So that plays into it as well.

So any ideas, advice and/or tips would be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to botch a "simple" DIY like this.

Knowing how the current collar attaches would help. Is it a plain buckle? Snaps? Velcro? Something else?

Yes. Knowing what kind of collar and how it closes would help. If it is leather or cloth, it can be as simple as taking out some threads and sewing a new lach on. You might need to cut some small holes into it if you want metal latches. This can be easily done if it is a double sided leather collar. In that case you would cut a small hole in the top piece, after taking apart the main stitch holding the two halves together, then insert the eye hole side of the latch in the center of the two, then replace the main stitch. It is always a good idea to at least sew around the inside of any big holes you put into it, depending on the thickness. Hope this helps some.

If it is a standard buckle, maybe it can be replaced with a lockable buckle. They are available at any Tandy outlet.

If the buckle is a non locking type you can simply run the lock through one of the holes in the strap after the buckle is closed. Then the lock is too big to pass through the buckle.

Thank you very much. Like I said, I was a bit sleep deprivated earlier. But honestly, even if I would have been at my full faculties, I'd most likely not have come up with something so simple.

If you want a solution that is a little more elegant and will keep that lock from acting like a flail whever the wearer turns their head, you can easily replace the buckle with a locking roller buckle such as one of the ones on this page (scroll to the bottom).
