I must admit...I never understood the appeal of a roller coaster.  OK, so it goes really fast.  Wow.  I can go really fast in my car and not have to wait in line to do it.  Seems to be a poor risk-reward ratio to me.

Report: Parks shut down drop-tower rides after teen loses feet
POSTED: 1751 GMT (0151 HKT), June 22, 2007

(CNN) -- A teen who lost her feet in an accident at a Kentucky amusement park has undergone surgery, a park spokeswoman said Friday, while two park operators closed similar rides around the country.

...

The girl's feet were completely amputated just below the ankle Thursday afternoon while riding the Superman Tower of Power at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville.

Her feet were recovered by Six Flags staff and were sent to the hospital with her, McLean said.

During the Tower of Power ride, passengers are hoisted aloft, suspended momentarily, then pulled down, according to the park's Web site. Passengers -- secured with bars and seat belts but with arms and legs free -- drop 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping "just 20 terrifying feet above the pavement," the Web site says.

A police dispatcher said a cord wrapped around the girl's feet while she was on the ride.

"I seen the car go up. Then, like, the cable broke ... and I heard a lot of people screaming," Chris Stinnett, who was at a ride next to the Tower of Power, told CNN affiliate WDRB/WMYO-TV in Louisville.

"The cable went under the car -- and I seen it pull up and hit a lot of people -- and I seen them bring their legs up," he said.

"We are not confirming that happened," McLean said. "There was a lot of misinformation from witnesses."

It's rare, but these kind of accidents happen. Anything mechanical is bound to fail sooner or later.

There was a strap caught around her feet, I don't think it was mechanical.  That was my assumption after reading an earlier article, perhaps there is more info now.

I tried looking for information this afternoon.  Every report came off the same Six Flags press release.  No info on the condition of the girl.  It seems if they had been able to re-attach her feet, somebody would have released the good news.

Oh my God, that poor girl!  I've always been afraid of roller coasters and I told myself that this year I would face that fear and get on a roller coaster.  Won't be happening now.

I've been meaning to go to Six Flags and Disneyland for a while now. Wonder if I can gather up a few good friends and decide on a destination for next weekend.

At one point you couldn't get me on one of these death contraptions to save your soul. Now I'm a bit of a junkie. I like the rush. I like the weightlessness. I like the anticipation. The only thing I bloody well hate is the line.

As for the mishap with that girl... shit happens. It's a risk you take when getting on a ride. But the chances of these kinds of major fuck-ups actually happening aren't astronomically high. You might even have a better chance of winning the lottery than having bits and pieces of yourself hacked, whacked or snapped off.

Well MadameDahlia and Rumtiger your both sick ---holes. Yes things happen but this ride and operator has had problems in the past. I have seen the ride myself on many trips to the Lousiville. All I can say is I bet if the girl was your child you be the first in line  saying  I am going to get a lawer and make millions. The sad thing is tragety happens but sadder is the fact we take advantage of that tragety for our own greed and the girl gets nothing as the parent spend it all, that is after the attorneys get their cuts. There is no winner and saddly the girl is the looser just becasue she wanted to have some fun with friends. Then of course we have the people like you that make the sick comments. To bad did not happen to you or your family. What sicko jerks we have in society today

Master Desire,
The real "TRAGEDY" here is that there are those like you who are allowed to murder the English language and spread so much misinformation.
First, if you look in the upper right hand corner of the tool bar you will find an icon with the letters "abc" and a check mark underneath them.  This is called spell check and it will show you the words that are misspelled in your text.
Second, when the case for the child is settled a court appointed advocate will oversee the spending until she is of legal age to manage her own affairs.  Yes, there will be "LAWYER" fees, but as in most cases of this type, the defendant or defendants insurance company will pay almost the entire amount.  There may be some "paperwork fees, but for the most part the plaintiff pays nothing.  The award will probably go into a trust fund from which the child and her parents, with the consent of  the advocate, can draw from.  Her medical fees will more than likely be paid by the park or the rides insurance company.  In addition, now OSHA is probably involved since this may be viewed as an industrial accident as it involves machinery.
So, in conculsion, yes Tragedy happens, and yes we often seek assistance from Lawyers, but there is no greater tragedy than a person not knowing how to use the tools provided to ensure we don't have to view another murder of the English language.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says you have a 1 in 1.5 billion chance of being killed or seriously injured in a roller coaster or thrill ride.

In fact, did you know a theme park has to pay much higher insurance premiums for a merry-go-round than a roller coaster? Why? Because guess what....you have a statistically much higher chance of the carousel injuring you than the roller coaster.

Queen,
Technically this ride is not a roller coaster. It is just a vertical tower that lifts you straight up, drops you straight down and stops you just before hitting bottom. Sort of a modern version of the old Parachute Drop ride at Coney Island which had a long string of accidents and was finally shut down for saftey reasons not long before that part of Coney Island went out of business. Real roller coasters do have accidents occasionally, but they are quite rare. However when they happen it's like a plane crash as the press jumps all over each one and makes certain it becomes national news.
I feel bad for this girl since she was so young and her life is permanently altered, but the reality is that she was at more risk of death on the drive to the park than on any of the rides. As pilots often say, "Once you make it to the airport, the dangerous part of the trip is over."
I've always felt like submissives should love roller coasters. A ride that is scarey and fun at the same time is a lot like D/s in some ways, you just don't get collared by the coaster. Go ahead and get yourself on one this summer.

You'll find the word you wrote as 'icon' is actually 'button'.

It's called a 'spellchecker' not a 'spell check'

It's 'toolbar' and not 'tool bar'.

'she is of legal age' should really be 'of a legal age' (age is a countable noun, and so requires an article).

And what is with the " before paperwork?

'can draw from' should really be 'can withdraw from'

'the rides insurance company' this is ambiguous, how about 'the insurers for the rides'?

'conculsion' - should this perhaps be 'conclusion'?

Before you can claim perfection in the English language please pay attention to the following:

1. more accurate word choices
2. a better style
3. revision of what you have written
