What perceptions of TPE cause the distaste, fear or disbelief that seems to be so prevalent?

TPE is a much more pronounced form of D/s. The Doms are called to be more Dominant, the subs more submissive. And, if my time on this board's taught me anything, there's something of a penis-envy thing going on about who's more Dominant or submissive.

Such as, I can honestly make this statement: "I am a Master. I control my slave, as opposed to guiding her. I am more dominant than a Dom who simply guides his sub." I can assure you, in even saying that, for the sake of example, I've angered a couple of readers, should at least so many read this. "You're saying you're more Dominant than me?!" While it's obvious, it's to be ignored, as, apparently, Dominance is the basis of legitimacy for one of the Dominant end of the spectrum, and to claim to be more Dominant than another is to delegitmize the basis of value of their opinions, and, consquently, identity.

Or, rather, in more simplistic terms..
TPE means more Dominant/submissive. People dislike the notion that they're not the epitome of Dominance/submission and take offense to the obvious implication. Also, TPE can take fire for the same reasons D/s takes fire from the vanilla world: disgust for such a dynamic on the basis that such Dominants must be sick and such submissives must be spineless, as AquaticSub was kind enough to bletch out in the response above this.

That all owners are abusive fucks and all subs/slaves are spineless twits with stockholme sydrome? At least that is the one that pisses me off the most.

And, perhaps, at some primal level, it's scary. Who knows?

Still, for the most of the question, in context, I think that people in this world equate Dominance/submission with value as an individual in this life, and such individuals consquentially find themselves demeaned, and thusly offended, by those who live by TPE.

The myth that pisses me off the most comes from the non-kinky folks: bdsm and other alternative sexual lifestyles are sick, abnormal, disgusting, shameful, dangerous. I think this general attitude and lack of education causes a lot of uneccesary unhappiness.

It just grinds my gizzard.

Greetings AquaticSub,

Yes that is irritating. although the "TPE isn't real it's a myth" thing is rather infuriating as well. People tend to not believe in that which they have not expereinced. Or so it seems.

I believe it is the myth ...Where the master supposedly attempted to dry off his slave in a microwave.

That TPE requires 24/7 . It does not. What is ones extreme is not to another.

How can you have a *total* PE without a 24/7 relationship?

Or rather - how are you defining "24/7" here?

MadRabbit -> RE: TPE Myths and Legends.... (7/1/2007 5:17:18 AM)

That the Total Power is actually Total Power.

If it was, it would be called Total Power, and not Total Power Exchange.

The slave is simply "lending" you the power to make all the decisions.

This is why I use prefer to use Absolute Authority instead of TPE. Somewhat semantical, but makes that distinction.

In the end, the notion of actually having Total Power over a slave is merely a fantasy illusion. I have my authority in the relationship created by the power of both consenting parties.

The power might not be exactly equal due to coercion threw punishment and other things like codependency, but the notion of consent means the slave always retains their power and never really gives it up.

I prefer to think of the relationship in a Ying Yang sense. Two different sides, not exactly equal, but complimentary, that come together to make one whole thing.

I'm not saying TPE in a sense doesnt exist. In the end, its just another way of defining what I have said above in a different perspective. But the definition of "The slave gives up all power and the Master takes on omnipotence" is fantasy.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: TPE Myths and Legends.... (7/1/2007 5:36:56 AM)

what i think(or maybe hope and pray) that tpe would be for me, the exchange of power would only be on the things he chose to exercise power over......how many or few things that is would be kind of apparent from the beginning of communications.

therefore, say if someone expressed a need to control bathroom visits(on a daily basis), or wanting to define my relationship with my son or family, or something else i find not acceptable, i would know they arent the one for me.

but they would be the one for someone.........

i hope that makes sense......

That anyone who wanted a TPE relationship has no self esteem, and the one with the power is some abuser who gets off on controlling women.  They see TPE as dysfunctional and sick.

That actually happened to a friend of my cousin's roomate. A guy I worked with a few years ago told me his brother was a submissive and his Mistress made him support her by working in a supermarket. One morning, he was unloading a produce truck and he was bitten by a banana spider and died!
