"Three thousand year-old mummy discovered in Egypt"

Fri Jun 22, 4:08 PM ET

" CAIRO (AFP) - Archaeologists have discovered the 3,000-year-old mummy of a high priest to the god Amun in the southern city of Luxor, antiquities supremo Zahi Hawass told the official MENA news agency on Saturday.

The 18th Dynasty mummy of Sennefer was unearthed in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings -- one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world -- by a team from Britain's Cambridge University.

"The mummy was found in tomb 99 in the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of Luxor," Hawass said.

A high priest was considered to be the most important man after the king, performing duties, religious rituals and offerings on his behalf.

Other mummies were found during the excavation, including one with a brain tumour, a foetus, a female mummy wrapped in plaster and others which appeared to have suffered from arthritis, Hawass said.

The Valley of the Kings was used as a burial site for royalty and nobles to the west of present day Luxor, some 700 kilometres (450 miles) south of Cairo.

Millions of foreign tourists come to see Egypt's pharaonic treasures each year, including hundreds of thousands making the long journey south from the capital to the Valley of the Kings.

Hawass said a report on the findings would be presented to Culture Minister Faruq Hosni, in order to allocate resources for continued excavations in the area. "

It is pretty amazing that they still keep finding stuff like this out there but I am sure there is much more still to be found. I spent 6 months in Egypt working a few years ago and it is the most incredible place. The whole Valley of the Kings area is wonderful but sadly when people are on holiday they usually only get to spend a few hours there which is not enough time to explore. The country as a whole has so much to see it is hard to fit it all in.

One day I will go back and spend some time visiting the places I did not have time for due to work.

Fascinating!! I love that type of stuff. Here is a crazy question: The hieroglyphs  have been deciphered for many many years now.But....  how do we know for sure that  what the experts say a symbol means is really what it means?  Wouldn't it be Wild if all this time just one little symbol was wrong. The info we have been learning all these years is off. What if it was discovered what it really meant and unlocked a lot of mysteries

I may get corrected here, but I think they know a lot of this stuff from the Rosetta stone, which had stuff enscribed in several ancient languages, one of which was Greek (which we knew), so it was possible then to decipher the others.

Although I did see a TV doc once where the main breakthrough was down to some guy who realised that the symbols themselves were'nt words but used as sounds which were combined to make words. So a crane could be a crane or a cr sound for instance.

It was an experience. At first I hated it as I had spent the previous 6 months working in Singapore which is the cleanest city possible. Arriving in Cairo was quite a shock. My sister was mad about egyptology at the time and she was so upset that I was off to work there. She came to visit for 2 weeks and had a fantastic time and saw far more in her 2 weeks than I did in my 6 months. We have been back a few times since then and I would love to visit again. It is a truly fascinating place.

I can well imagine the contrat between sleek desinfected Singapore and Cairo must be a bit of a shock at first. But shock are good :-)  I went to Tunisia, and Morroco, but never made it to Egypt, though I had the opportunity to treck to Akkaba when I stayed in Israel... I never did: was enjoying being lazy too much.

Serves me right.

Did you ever go to Petra (Jordan)?

That's nothing, they're finding relics in Ireland now that have been carbon dated to 9,000 years ago.
Newgrange outside of Dublin is I think 6,500 years old.

That is so cool, susie! Egypt is one of the places I most desire to visit and know that a week would not suffice.
