Help!!! I've got 3 baby raccoons in the motor compartment of my van. How do I get them out and keep them out? Anybody dealt with this before? Any ideas barring making shredded raccoon bits?

Only thing I can think of is to call a wildlife group in your area, Sari. They'd be better equipped to extracting your new guests and return them to the wild.

If I can't get them out any other way then I will do that. I just want them out safely so I can start it. I will need to take it to the shop again soon. All the ums and half the adults on my street came down to see them lol. I also have little raccoon footprints all over my windshield.

my friend called me tonite and told me that she found a kitten that was soo small she had to go to PETSMART  and buy milk and a bottle to feed her...She said the staff was very kind to her and helped explain how to care for the kitten..

That reminds me.....we also have 3 kittens under 6 weeks old under the shed in the back yard. Have seen them come out and play with mama cat in the back yard.

That they are....too damn adorable.

Had a dog years ago that was one of the best mousers I've ever seen....doberman/collie/greyhound mix and very pretty. Just thought I'd throw that out there since the chasing moths made me remember her.

well if you don;t want to wait on animal control i would try coaxing them out with food and into a pet carrier.

we once had a racoon for foster care. fell down a chimney and wildlife services let me dad keep him til he grew up. sucker didn't want to be toilet trained. but he loved dog kibble. could always try luring them out with that??

I finally had to set a humane trap and catch the whole family,I took then down the road and turned then loose in my neighbors corn field..They are bad to raid my trash cans when I set them out the night before, solved this problem a hound pup running loose....

contact LMsdevotedone on the other side.. she will know what to do. She is my resident animal person; she runs a recognized rehab for animals, and recently released a few racoons back into the wild. She knows ALL about racoons. She can tell ya what to do and how to do it. Tell her slaverosebeauty sent you. She is a great friend; she will tell ya exactly what to do.

I found the following on a web site:

quote:

In many states, because the raccoon is a rabies vector, it's often illegal to relocate them.

The same site said that many of the racoon deterrents sold commercially do not work. They stated your best bet is to get professionals.

The Audubon Society of Portland has some good advice. One being, not to feed them.

http://www.audubonportland.org/livingwithwildlife/brochures/raccoons/document_view

Good luck! :)

Well, here's an update. Two of the baby coons are gone as of the other night, but one seems determined to live under the hood of my van. Have talked to the wildlife places local to me as well as Animal Control and noone wants to come get it. Each keeps passing the buck to the other and I am very frustrated. *sigh* One of the wildlife places I called, the guy I talked to told me to just start my van and drive away and if the baby coon got killed, oh well, one less to worry about! sheesh!

Wow, that's no fun :)        Personally, I'd be very tempted to open up the hood and hose the crap out of the engine compartment. I agree that luring it out with food may not be the best long term solution.

Good luck with that,
