Fuck them. LET THEM WALK AWAY. It's not like there aren't PLENTY of people who will step up and take that broadcast license, and use it in accordance with The People's regulation. How did people make money in Radio BEFORE the Fairness Doctrine? Yup. Hand over Fist. You talk about making money like it’s a bad thing. Profit is not bad. Profit is good (how one goes about getting that profit may be bad but that is an entirely separate issue). Profit means paychecks. Profit means tax revenue. Profit means jobs. You say "fuck them," but what I don’t understand is that the people make their choices known by what they will or will not listen to, but you want the government (in the guise of "the people," but really in the guise of political interests) to come in and declare that the people don’t really want what their choices show they want but would rather have crap they don’t want to listen to (this kind of "I know what’s best for you better than you do" arrogance is found everywhere in politics but is particularly endemic on the left). It appears to me that what you are really saying is "people are listening to political speech that I don’t like, so let’s have the government force them to listen to the political speech I do like." Of course, they won’t listen to the political speech they don’t like and now thanks to this so called Fairness Doctrine, they wouldn’t be able to listen to political speech they do like. Is that the real aim? It is for many. Freedom is guarantee to speak but not a guarantee to be heard. A belief in freedom requires a tolerance of other people’s viewpoints – it does not require an acceptance of them. You don’t have to like Ann Coulter’s (to try and bring this back to the original subject matter) or Rush Limbaugh’s views, but if you believe in freedom, you have to accept other people’s right to listen to them – and to not listen to what you have to say if that is what they choose. On a completely unrelated topic, my copy of "Guards! Guards!" arrived in the mail today – but I’ve got a couple of other books to get through before I pick it up.
