Level -> Your brain on politics (6/28/2007 3:25:38 AM)

By Sharon Begley - Newsweek

June 27, 2007 - Do you remember when candidate George W. Bush berated Al Gore during the 2000 presidential debates for alleged funny business in his fund-raising? Bush said, “You know, going to a Buddhist temple and then claiming it wasn’t a fund-raiser isn’t my view of responsibility.” It was a direct attack on the honor of a fellow Southerner, and Gore wasn’t taking it. “You have attacked my honor and integrity,” the vice president shot back. “I think it’s time to teach you a few old-fashioned lessons about character. When I enlisted to fight in the Vietnam War, you were talkin’ real tough about Vietnam. But when you got the call, you called your daddy and begged him to pull some strings so you wouldn’t have to go to war. So instead of defending your country with honor, you put some poor Texas millworker’s kid on the front line in your place to get shot at. Where I come from, we call that a coward.

“When I was working hard, raising my family, you were busy drinking yourself and your family into the ground. Why don’t you tell us how many times you got behind the wheel of a car with a few drinks under your belt? Where I come from, we call that a drunk.

“When I was serving in the U.S. Senate, your own father’s government had to investigate you on the charge that you’d swindled a bunch of old people out of their life savings by using insider knowledge to sell off stocks you knew were about to drop. Where I come from, we call that crooked. So governor, don’t you ever lecture me about character. And don’t you ever talk to me that way again in front of my family or my fellow citizens.”

Don’t remember that reply? There’s a reason: Gore never said anything like it....

gee there is an idea- remember things that were never said.

my buddy jim uses that tactic.  he says... " you said you wanted to help"  --- placing the other person into looking stingy if they dont help....  brilliant but sneaky.

I've been wondering for years why Democratic politicians suck so much at rhetoric.

On the other hand, I've been wondering for years why Republicans vote the way they do.

TheHeretic -> RE: Your brain on politics (6/30/2007 9:14:44 AM)

I have to disagree with you big time on this one, Level.  Big enough to just call the theory a big cartload of horseshit.

Democrats haven’t. Instead, their strategists start from an 18th-century vision of the mind as dispassionate, making decisions by rationally weighing evidence and balancing pros and cons. That assumption is a recipe for high-minded campaigning.

The Dems have been using fear and hatred to motivate voters as long as I can remember.  "George Bush hates Black people."  "The Republicans are going to take away your Social Security."  Personal interest, fear and greed are the prime motivators they use to get votes.

Toss this one on the rubbish heap.

.......and are Republicans any more noble? If not, then perhaps a better argument would be to apply the statement to all politicians.......

Level -> RE: Your brain on politics (6/30/2007 9:22:00 AM)

Rich, keep in mind I'm not neccesarily agreeing with many of the topics I post [:D].

Calm, rational thought, Rosie O'donnell, PETA and Jessie Jackson go together like peanut butter and trout.

Now, I could say the same for Ann Coulter, Tom Delay, and Rick Perry....

There's one that gets me. There was a thread here a long time ago, and when I disagreed with a similar statement, it ended up with me being equated with the KKK. Talk about bullshit!

NavyDDG54 -> RE: Your brain on politics (6/30/2007 9:31:08 AM)

GW Hates black people so much he has had two consecutive black secretaries of state....

philosophy -> RE: Your brain on politics (6/30/2007 9:35:42 AM)

..so far the only people i've seen on these fora talk about even the possibility of GWB hating black people have been republicans.

Point taken, my friend.  You offered this one without commentary.  It was the position of the author discussed in the link that I consider nothing but horseshit, delusion, and denial of history.

Don't make me get out the search function, phil [:D]

I give you my word, the folks on the thread I was talking about were NOT Republicans.

Exactly.

Well, let me backtrack a bit; the thread I was referring to, that had chaingang calling me a bigot, was about Bush hating homosexuals, not black people, so I need to correct that. But both charges are wrong.

caitlyn -> RE: Your brain on politics (6/30/2007 10:28:22 AM)

Democrats could win wide popularity, if their pundits would stop attacking individual people, and instead lump the entire conservative movement into one group, in order to attack them all.

Watch/listen/read any conservative pundit, and every third sentence, there is a wonderfully effective generalization, like: "Liberals feel X", or "You can't trust liberals, because they are Y."

Liberals use this same strategy at time, but deny it the proper repetitive drama-ramma to make it entirely effective.

I must say, for Republicans, it's a brilliant strategy!!! You have to give credit where it's due. The right wing gets to hammer away at everyone, without ever actually hammering away at anyone.

If it wasn't so goddamn effective, I would think it was a goddamn joke. But ... I guess that's the kind of joke that God likes best. [;)]

...and i was talking about these fora, not American media TH.........specifically this thread. It just looked like those of a republican leaning making up an accusation that hadn't been made.

If you look at the link in question, Phil, you'll find that my reference to the Dems ( referring specifically to the party ) was pretty much a mirror of the tone used there discussing Republicans.  I try to be specific about which particular group I'm painting with a broad brush. [:D]  It's kind of difficult to avoid when discussing over-all party strategies.

...i had a closer look TH, now forgive me if i read this wrong but aren't you actually proving the point? No-one on this thread has said that GWB hates blacks, yet that has become what we are discussing. Seems to me it's the same tactic the author of the piece linked to in the OP is advocating.

The actual quote from Kanye West was "Bush does not care about black people."

Which I think is correct, unlike the statement "George W. Bush hates black people."  Hatred is a form of caring.  A form of connection.  I would actually think a more accurate assessment is that George W. Bush does not care about anybody but himself and his investments and the cronies he can get something from.

Just me, could be wrong, etc.

No, not in this specific thread, phil, I thought you meant in the forum in general.
