JENA, La. - A black teenager who once faced attempted murder and conspiracy charges in the beating of a white schoolmate amid growing racial tension at their high school was convicted Thursday on lesser, but still serious, felony charges.
After the attempted murder charges were reduced by a prosecutor earlier this week, an all-white six-member jury found Mychal Bell, 17, guilty of the new charges: aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated second-degree battery. Those charges could lead to a sentence of more than 20 years for Bell, who would have faced decades more in prison on the attempted murder counts.

MURPHY, Texas - A sting in which police teamed up with “Dateline NBC” to catch online pedophiles was supposed to send a flinty-eyed, Texas-style warning about this Dallas suburb: Don’t mess with Murphy.
Instead, it has turned into a fiasco.
One of the 25 men caught in the sting — a prosecutor from a neighboring county — committed suicide when police came to arrest him.

WASHINGTON - President Bush, moving toward a constitutional showdown with Congress, asserted executive privilege Thursday and rejected lawmakers' demands for documents that could shed light on the firings of federal prosecutors.
Bush's attorney told Congress the White House would not turn over subpoenaed documents for former presidential counsel Harriet Miers and former political director Sara Taylor. Congressional panels want the documents for their investigations of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' stewardship of the Justice Department, including complaints of undue political influence.

Edwards equates Coulter's words with racism

MOSCOW - Russia successfully tested a new sea-based ballistic missile Thursday after several previous failures, a naval spokesman said.
Capt. Igor Dygalo told The Associated Press that the Bulava missile hit its target on the Pacific peninsula of Kamchatka after being launched from the submarine Dmitry Donskoi in the White Sea.
According to published Russian news reports, the Bulava is designed to have a range of 6,200 miles and carry six individually targeted nuclear warheads. It is expected to be placed on three new Borei-class nuclear submarines that are under construction.

JERUSALEM - President Moshe Katsav signed a plea bargain Thursday that will force him to resign but included no rape charges and entailed no jail time, Attorney General Meni Mazuz said.
Under the deal, Katsav — who had insisted he was innocent of wrongdoing and the victim of a slur campaign — will plead guilty to sexual harassment, indecent acts and harassing a witness, Mazuz said.
