NEW YORK - Blockbuster Inc. plans to close 282 stores in the U.S. this year to improve operating margins and expand domestic share, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Thursday.

Blockbuster’s effort to accelerate closures of underperforming and marginal U.S. stores comes as the company is spending heavily to beef up its online-rental business to compete with rival online DVD rental service Netflix Inc.

“Traffic is just not what it used to be when Blockbuster was the big rooster in the hen house,” said Andy Cross, senior analyst with The Motley Fool.

Uhh...we only get two choices?  I feel like a voter on Election Day.

Edited to add: I see you've added a third and fourth option, but there's plenty more.  There's On Demand.  There's Tivo.  There are even some web businesses that will let you download a movie directly; it works for a few nights, and then becomes useless.  Also, my local grocery store has a vending machine that will rent you a movie for $1 a night, and the selections are changed weekly.  The company is called DVDxpress.

mom and pop place. It's close by, and I would rather give my money to them, than the big name places.

i'd vote, but the options don't cover everything. i watch some movies in theaters, and others on DVD...some movies i see at theaters, i end up buying from Wal-Mart.

lilsubl -> RE: Where do you get your movies? And why? (6/28/2007 5:17:20 PM)

i buy movies at truck stops & WalMart-type places, so i really need an "other" option to vote...

Okay, I added a few more options.

CrimsonMoan -> RE: Where do you get your movies? And why? (6/28/2007 5:25:12 PM)

I either watch them on cable or at the movie theaters or just download them. so much easier and cheaper

I go to chains like Blockbuster or Hollywood Video and buy their previously viewed dvds.  Love the 3 for $20.00

I just joined Netflix, but I usually just get movies off On Demand.  Or I'll borrow DVDs from friends.  I almost never go to the movies.  I'd like to go more, but I'm a compulsive multi-tasker and get a little frustrated when I have to give my undivided attention to something for two hours.

We get ours from netflix because we live 20 miles from a video store that sucks. It is just more convenient in the rural area we live. With gas prices driving 20 or so miles to get a movie costs more than the movies. We have had 3 years and not a problem. They always have been fast and reliable.

I rent from the Ma & Pop place... the fellow is very nice, and I'd rather keep a neighbour in a job than fill some conglomerate's shareholder's pockets.

On cheepie days, if I'm bored or bribed, I'll go to the theater. [:D]

I rent from blockbuster, with their total access package. Why because it's cheaper than buying 3 at a time with no plan, in store rentals once a week, perks, bonus's and now inally with TA bring in your 3 from before, and pick out three new ones, and they mail in the old ones. You almost never have to be out of movies if you don't wish to be.

I am the cheap and lazy type when it comes to videos... so i download most of mine from an online rental/purchase store called Movielink.  They are about the same price as everyone else..... have daily specials during the week where they feature a movie for less than a dollar.... and weekly specials where movies are half price which works out to about 2.50.  I dont have to worry about returning them and with the price of gas these days... i dont have to waste it on movies.

DeviantlyD -> RE: Where do you get your movies? And why? (6/29/2007 1:36:22 AM)

I only watch movies on t.v. (And even then it's rare.) The money machine that is Hollywood isn't getting my hard earned $$$'s. Actors are ridiculously overpaid...and then such a huge section of the public adores them and places them on a pedestal. What for? There are so many other people worthy of my adoration.

For those that would argue I'm paying Hollywood by watching television...well Hollywood productions aren't the only thing on t.v. and I just get the benefit of seeing movies too because I have cable. Besides...the cable is part of my rent. :)
