thetammyjo -> Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Books that Click with your BDSM Interests (6/29/2007 11:21:51 AM)

Got totally distracted down in our library when I spied one of my books. Went through some shelves and came up with the following list. Now these are mainstream science fiction, fantasy, or horror books that I choose because they had Ds overtones or similiar issues that interest/interested me since I was young.

Please feel free to add to the list:

"The Mount" by Carol Emshwiller
"Ibis" by Linda Steele
"Sar" by John Robert Russell
"Califia's Daughters" by Leigh Richards
"The Shore of Women" by Pamela Sargent
"Ritual of Proof" by Dara Joy
"Citizen of the Galaxy" by Robert Heinlein
"Eve's Rib" by Bryn Chandler
"When Vioha Wakes" by Joy Chant
"Levianthan's Deep" by Jayge Carr
and the "Black Jewel Trilogy" by Anne Bishop.

I'm sure there are even more books on my shelves that fit into these general categories.

Laurel K. Hamilton.  Submissive wereleopards and alpha werewolf pack dynamics, yum.  The Anita Blake books might as well be a primer on how I think of D/s.

A lot of the Robert Jordan books have D/s overtones, if not explicit. I suppose, one might not recognize it if you weren't into kink already, but they are there if you look.

MissOchistic -> RE: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Books that Click with your BDSM Interests (6/29/2007 11:45:59 AM)

"Gerald's Game" by Stephen King, for pretty obvious reasons.

And although it's not a book, I've been turned on and thinking heavily lately about the very strong BDSM undertones I got from "Black Snake Moan". It was very Daddy/daughter sexy and then the substitute weddng band at the end...? Anyone else feel this?

vield -> RE: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Books that Click with your BDSM Interests (6/29/2007 11:48:36 AM)

Yes there are LOTS of books which fit into BD/SM from the stance of being published as Sci Fi, Horror, etc,

Ibis by Linda Steele is certainly one I enjoy. Linda is a dear friend of mine and I would say the FemDomme world she camouflages as science fiction is one she'd not mind having!
Much of Robert E. Howard's fantasy work (including the Conan novels he wrote) had a BD/SM flavor.
Marie, Allan and the Ice Gods, and Child of Storm by H. Rider Haggard also have interesting power exchange variations in them.
For extreme horror torture scenes the 8 or 9 books of the Lost Regiment novels by William Forschen get way beyond bizarre. The Merki Moon Feast is not something to read about if you are subject to nightmares.
Most of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novels had power exchange angles, bondage, sexual threats and so forth in then, but his Martian novels paint lovely pictures of warriors and princesses wearing jewel ercrusted harness served by their male and female slaves before retiring to their sleeping silks or furs. ERB does not get graphic sexually but the whole scene of his Mars is far more hot than the Gor novels, in my opinion. Add a few HOT illustrations as some of the hard covers have & that "helped" me thru the night as a kid!
Also there were some Very graphic (some with illustrations) books about The Lives of the Saints in catholic school libraries back in the 50's and 60's, which may still be there. All those martyrs and such, lol. Trying to resist temptations, even under torture.....

Has she published similiarly themed books? Linda Steele, to be more specific.

The Kushiel books by Jacqueline Kennedy, about a woman blessed by the gods to feel pleasure and pain as one. Very hot stuff.
The books were Kushiels Dart, Kushiels Chosen, Kushiels Avatar and Kushiels Scion.

Edited to add: these contain blatant descriptions of floggings, spankings, knife play, S/M etc.

velvetears -> RE: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Books that Click with your BDSM Interests (6/29/2007 1:28:37 PM)

Rosemary Rogers and Johanna Lindsay, both romance writers, seem to have D/s overtones in all their books - the heroine is always captured and fights against her captor only to be overcome in some way by the hero.  There is usually a spanking scene in almost every book and in the end, after chapters of fighting the hero they fall in love and love happily ever after.  i used to read them in my 20's - don't know if they are publishing anymore.  Very light D/s but it's there.

This is a great thread!

I would love to see this expanded to include non sci-fi/fantasy books also that don't even necessarily have a bdsmish overtone to them, but have a healthy dose of captured and interrogated good guys (or bad guys)!

Christine Feehan's Dark series has some serious Male Dom/female sub overtones, including but not limited to rough sex and earning submission thru love...
Sherrilyn Kenyon's BAD series has D/s overtones and her Night series has some hot vampire sex scenes...
Laruell K Hamilton's Merideth Gentry novels have a lot of hot rough sex scenes...(i am gonna have to suck it up and read the Anita Blake series now)
Jaquelyn Frank's gargoyle books have D/s overtones as well....
hmm everything i read has D/s overtones...of course 95% of the books i read have vampires, werewolves or some other supernatural creature and they are not gentle by nature so rough sex is kind of a given...and i like it better when the girl finally submits so i am more likely to read more books by an author who has that kind of sex scene...

sluggy67 -> RE: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Books that Click with your BDSM Interests (6/29/2007 2:34:24 PM)

John Ringo is a sci-fi writer who does some action/adventure stuff with STRONG D/s scenes.  We are talking blatant, explicit stuff.  You can tell he knows of what he writes.  The scenes are well-written, and very erotic.  The protagonist is a Dom who picks up a couple of college students on vacation (before all the shooting and action start).  When he demands that they call their parents to let them know where they will be, the girls find out that their parents aren't quite as vanilla as they thought!  The series starts with Ghost, then Kildar, Choosers of the Slain, and Unto the Breach.
His sci-fi stuff is where he started, and it is great.  He also has a sci-fi/fantasy series with kinghts, swords, elves, etc.  The first novel is called There Will Be Dragons.
Go to johnringo.com or baen.com.
You will not be sorry.

Samuel Delaney's Neveryon series. I recall reading other books of Delany's that hit on bdsm themes, but i can't recall the titles.

1001 Nights: trans. Richard Burton
Image of the Beast: Phillip Jose Farmer

There was a short story in Piers Anthony's Anthonology that stuck with me for years... it was about a culture that established a social hierarchy based on how much torture the individual could endure. One of those
"This is disturbing!"
"This is hot!"
"It's disturbing that this is hot"
"Don't care, this is hot!"

thangs...

Terry Goodkind, the whole series.

bipolarber -> RE: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Books that Click with your BDSM Interests (6/30/2007 7:47:51 AM)

I have to agree with the earlier post on Edgar Rice Burroughs. Barsoom is far sexier than Gor. (Of course, it helps the ERB can write better than John Norman.)

Pat Califia wrote a great novella about BDSM cat people, but I can't quite remember the title. I know it's reprinted in one of her collections though.

There's also a gay author, Aaron Travis, who has written some amazing historical/pulp/grindhouse style porn. "Slaves to the Empire" and "Big Shots" never fail to re-energize my libido, even if I'm still recovering from a bout of the flu.

Badboy Press has a pretty good series collection of erotic SF stories called (somewhat obviously) "Queer Science Fiction." Most of the series' volumes are collections of two or more authors.

And of course, you can always click on over to Circlet Press, and see what yummy bit of hotness Cecila Tan is editing. "Fetish Fantastic" still has by vote for best erotic anthology of the last decade.

Or, if you like your SF erotica a bit more visual, try NBM publishing. They print Michael Manning's graphic novels, and a host of others. As one Domme once said, "I'd gladly murder someone, if it meant I could go live in the Spider Garden."

And, just to be complete: let's also mention that Anne Rice's vampire novels, her San Francisco voice novels like Belinda and Exit to Eden and the Beauty Trilogy are all great fantasy too!

And when you get right down to it, John Willie's "Magic Island" stories are also high fantasy, right up there with ERB's "The Land That Time Forgot" (only with more ponygirls, and fewer dinosaurs.)

taintedgypsy -> RE: Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Books that Click with your BDSM Interests (6/30/2007 8:32:36 AM)

ok love this thread...

If you are into books about really strong heroines that just survive anything complete with graphic punishment and plenty of sex, that usually ends up with a Dominant male saving the day and winning her heart, you must give Sharron Green a try; some of her stuff is amazing.

"JALAV" is a 5 book long epic about a world with two cultures, one an amazon culture and the other a completely male dominated culture where women are kept as slaves is awesome. The other one I liked was "Terrillian" a space agent type woman with mind powers who is posted to a warrior world that thinks she was given to him ... what I like most about her books is the endings usually blow your mind and they all seem to have a theme of natural law where the man is Dom but the woman is strong ... I read them when I was vanilla but then I read Gor when I was 19yrs old ... prob should reread them now with a D/s perspective lol.
