How far should comedy go?

Here are some clips, some may find them offensive, some may find them funny....

Should anything be "sacred" when it comes to humor?

Bill Hicks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRkA6zugNMQ

Chris Rock - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q8LxO4wnCQ

Dave Chappelle - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUxOpSwvfMs

Bob Saget - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_cKCK6Blv0

Whether I found some or all of any of those clips funny, hilarious, distasteful, or down right disturbing; the whole issue falls under the category of freedom of speech. The more limitations that are placed on us; the more our “freedoms” disappear.

I say, if it doesn’t hurt anyone; what’s the problem? People who don’t like it don’t have to watch/listen. After all, I happen to be someone whom falls in the category of, “out of the norm”, by much of the outside world, looking to be accepted for who and what I am. I would not feel right not allowing the next guy, the same courtesy.

The sad thing is; much of what was mentioned actually happens in this world, in one form or another. The only thing I have to say about pointing out the painfully obvious; if the truth hurts, change it.

Sincerely,

k

I don't know if anyone else saw it, but Whoopi Goldberg addressed this at the very end of a comedy special she did on bravo..told a racial joke..noted the reactions..then asked (paraphrasing here)..now..if you didn't laugh..did you not laugh because it wasn't funny? Or did you not laugh because it was a joke about race? It was a very attention grabbing moment, for me anyway.
But..to the OP.. In general, the only type of humor I disagree with is that which is discriminatory..against race, handicap, religion, etc. But the fact that I don't approve of it, doesn't necessarily make it not funny. Not sure that I'm making sense, but..the thing is, you can always walk out, turn off the radio, switch the station, etc. Just my two cents, as always...

i've always been fond of the expression "Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke". i think that sums up my opinions on the matter.

anything goes....I hate PC speech.  If you go to see a comedian, and haven't done enough research to know their material, tough if you were offended...And honestly, as an adult, how do words "hurt"?  That's why I was taught the sticks and stones rhyme when I was a kid.

Sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me?

Broken bones tend to heal faster than being called names in my experience. Some of the people we call comedians are what we used to call bullies in the school playground.

edited because I forgot an s and I have more than one bone.

This is a huge part of the problem; isn’t it?

Odd, as I remember it, the bullies didn’t use their words, they weren’t quick witted enough. Perhaps, that’s just where I grew up.

Sincerely,

k

It just seems like it’s appealing to the lowest common denominator, hardly the peak of wit. I knew plenty of people at school that would point out differences in individuals I didn’t think it very intellectual just ignorant.

Pointing out differences is not the problem, not being accepting of those differences, when it does not affect the person doing the pointing; is.

Let's not forget, the bully is usually the bully, because they feel inadequate in some way, and do so to make themselves feel better.

Perhaps my perspective is off.

I watched Chris Rock and the whole time he is talking about the difference between black people and N****, I’m thinking, yep, us white folks have the same problem. Those few lazy, uneducated, or lacking common sense, giving the rest of us a bad name.

Sincerely,

k

Well said, k

I did laugh quite a bit when Rock was saying " '.... I've never been to jail....'.....'you're not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation having mother fucker!' "
