"Two car bombs found in West End" Last Updated: Friday, 29 June 2007, 23:41 GMT 00:41 UK Police have confirmed they are now investigating the discovery of two car bombs in the West End of London. Police said the second device had been found in a Mercedes hours after the car was given a parking ticket in Cockspur Street and towed to Park Lane. Another Mercedes, with a bomb made up of 60 litres of petrol, gas cylinders and nails, had been found outside a nightclub in Haymarket at 0130 BST. Both bombs were similar, potentially viable and clearly linked, police said. 'Troubling discovery' At a news conference on Friday evening, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism command, said the discovery of the second device was "obviously troubling" and "reinforces the need for the public to be alert". "There was a considerable amount of fuel and gas canisters, as in the first vehicle. There was also a substantial quantity of nails," he said. Speaking earlier about the first bomb, DAC Clarke said: "It is obvious that if the device had detonated there could have been serious injury or loss of life." Police sources said it would have caused "carnage" if it had exploded. "International elements" were believed to have been involved with the bombs, Whitehall sources told the BBC. The government's emergencies committee, known as Cobra, will be meeting on Saturday morning to discuss the attempted bombings, the BBC's political editor Nick Robinson said. The meeting could be chaired by either Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is not cancelling any planned engagements, or Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. I will second your sentiment, my smartass was general to the point of the problem, that is, they found this, due to heightened security at home, but even in the 70s in england my bags were with me all the time or a bobby magically appeared and I was searched from asshole to shoesole before entering St. Catherine's house or any building of import. The larger issue then, having made a tenuous peace with the IRA, england could have been fairly secure, now they--as the US have multiplied the threat. It was not my intention to disparage the fact that lives were indeed (not probably) spared. Ron

Don't know about safer and heightened security. One of the cars were dragged through central london on tow and then empounded because it received a parking ticket. The consequence of that could have been incredible. It was pure luck - nothing less. The first was noticed, due to the amazing paramedics - and I have seen little public congratulations to them - the bomb disposel experts on the other hand recieved much public praise. Ach I am such a cynic. Peace the.dark.

This is the classic characteristics of Al-Queda. Al-Queda likes explosions and several around the same time spread out and there is usually some strategy involved. After the change in government in Spain, Al-Queda hit the Madrid train system. In the days following the attack, the Spanish government declared it is pulling out of Iraq. Right now there is a change in government in Britain as Gordon Brown becomes the new PM. And right now Al-Queda is attacking Britain hoping that the government will reverse course in Iraq.
