But, what about those people that think ya'll are mean for not wanting to give the graduates the tax money? Isn't more money the answer? [sm=trident.gif]

Just to be clear : I am not totally against this bill. Nooo, quite the opposite. If they add a little Grandfather Clause. You know.. making the bill retroactive to..  say... 1978.
A year I picked out of the air of course[8|], but just happens to be the year I graduated a Mass. College.

hmmm,
apparently i made a mistake by starting this thread .
and im not sure why my thoughts on personal responsibility  would be so offensive?
would i hold a 16 yr old girls feet to the grindstone forever?
silly question . i am all for compromise here. in real time, frankly, i thrive on confrontation. here, i was simply trying to find a way to effectively communiacte without folks getting nasty.
i dont think ive said anything here , that would warrant the question u have asked about a 16 yr old getting pregnant. i do not oppose abortion. i do oppose my tax money being spent to pay for others abortions tho. unless as stated earlier, it was due to an act out of the control of the woman.(rape , etc)...
so please,, dont cherry pick 5 words out of a statement i have made, and try to make it mean something other then what i stated...
its called...context

a) I don't see anyone "getting nasty". You seem on the sensitive side.

b) I don't see anyone saying your views are " so offensive". You're reading too much in to it.

c) The only person I see being confrontational is you with the "don't cherry pick my words" comment. If you're unsure where the other poster is coming from, then just ask rather than assume.

d) You made a post about compromise. You put your position forward on a particular subject. I gave an alternative view. 'Fair enough in my book.

Back to your OP and compromise.

I can't really argue with you not wanting to hand over your tax to pay for someone elses' issues. Your money, your call. If the shoe's ever on the other foot and you find yourself on hard times, then no doubt the same principles will apply.

<FR>

......just going back to the thread title for a second, perhaps a way forward is to define our rules of engagement. For instance, i tend to agree with the poster that suggested that peoples views on abortions are generally fixed. Nevertheless we can all see examples where people overstep the bounds of that issue on both sides. Abortion as routine contraception or firebombing the homes of doctors who perform abortions. Can we agree on whether or not there are limits to self expression or personal choice? i.e. rules of engagement for ethical matters........

cjenny -> RE: what can we do to promote the healing? (7/1/2007 9:52:37 AM)

Maybe the answer is to have people live without the expectation of reward like that? Ugh.
I'm shaky on the cognitive thinking so either ignore or try and bear with me hehehe.

But so many 'bribe' kids to do what they are supposed to. To the point where it is actually expected and anticipated.

I think that idea undermines self growth because you need a sense of self satisfaction when you do well. Instead of outside validation more inside validation is needed. Growing, changing & seeing new things in the world are all a part of life. Growing up usually requires help but that help doesn't need to be in the form of reward.

Doing well can should be its own reward? I think that's what I'm trying to say lol.

When we do things to feel good simply for the accomplishment factor then I think we do them more often.

Maybe that is one way to begin some healing?

Oy vey I sure hope some of that made sense. [8|]

Edit: I think I needed to fix something.

uwinceismile -> RE: what can we do to promote the healing? (7/1/2007 10:02:56 AM)

cjenny,
i believe ur cognative skillz are up and running just fine .
ur post reminds me of some school districts....
instead of leting children, compete, and possibly lose (games such as kick ball, dodgebal etc.) they have banned these games, to make sure no childs feelings get hurt.  i would rather my child learns to lose, and hopefully win, with a good attitude, and recognize that it is in the effort they make that the reward comes, not so much by the outcome.
and i dont speak in theory here, i coached lil league for 15 seasons, so i have sen this dynamic at work first hand. we never had the best team in the league, but my kids gave it all they had, at every turn, and knew that thier success was measured by thier own efforts

i see a great deal of politcal discourse here. mostly a lot of "im right" and ur "wrong".

I don't see that, and it seems to me you're underestimating people.

There's a lot of "I don't agree with you because....", which is different.

Diverse points of view are healthy. One prevalent idea is a recipe for trouble - just take a look at the prevailing neo-liberal "democracy" and see the damage around the world.

Why should people be expected to compromise? Fuck that. If you don't agree with someone, then say it. There's no problem, and you can have a beer afterwards.

It's quite ironic actually for a nation with an extreme foreign policy......"let's all compromise". Quite funny that :-) You'll be paying Nicaragua their $20 billion as ruled by the International Court of Justice, then?

Be honest, the US is an ultra competitive nation who wouldn't compromise their own shit if they thought they could make a profit on it.

Gent, $20 b to Nicaragua?
This is why I'm against my govt. getting involved in any "international" org like that, the "U.N.", Nato, Nafta etc.
Just another avenue of  wealth redistribution.
You don't think third world countries are going to be sueing each other do you? Of course not! They don't have any money.
