Yes, that was a good one; though I liked 'Someday' better.

Of course, the fact that he's gorgeous has alot to do with it too [8D]

"Someday" - Steve Earle

I do!  I have XM Radio and used to love listening to his radio show.  He is a very outspoken death penalty activist and quite the author in addition to his wonderful songwriting.  One of my all-time favorite songs (recorded by Robert Earl Keen, Jr. but penned by Steve Earle) is "Tom Ames' Prayer" from Keen's "Gringo Honeymoon" CD.  That's poetry.  The song Earle wrote about John Walker Lindh (the young American Taliban) is also great.  Basically, I enjoy everything he does.  The man has kicked his heroin addiction, lived through a prison sentence, and come back better than ever.  He's a "celebrity" I can and do respect.  I always got a kick out of what he said about Townes VanZandt (one of his personal idols and one of the best song writers in the world):  "Townes VanZandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." [;)]  I wouldn't say VanZandt is THE best but he's sure up there.  Earle isn't afraid to say what he believes and stand behind it.  Ultra cool dude............luci

I like Steve Earle's music quite a bit... now if he could just do something about that druggie who keeps trashing his career....[8D]

The Steve Earle/Del McCoury Band shows were sublime. No way that chemistry could have continued, however.

Nothing I am aware of, "Fuck the FCC" is a song of his latest album

luci, reportedly Townes, when he heard that quote, replied: "I've met Bob Dylan and his bodyguards, and I don't think Steve could get anywhere near his coffee table."

Masternslave07 -> RE: The real BOSS (7/2/2007 10:58:29 AM)

I am a big fan of Steve Earl's music. Not so much a fan of his politics. Although he is right on about the FCC.
His observations on love and relationships can be brilliant. His observations on macro matters not so much.

Yes, he did...lol....In the VanZandt bio "To Live Is To Fly," this statement is reported.  I'd say it's correct[:)].........luci

Another guy I would put up there with Earl and Townes is Billy Joe Shaver. I love his songs. He has had more than his share of tragedy in his life, yet still seems to keep a positive outlook on life.

Wow, just got on P2P and nine people are feeding me Copperhead Road.

I shall give it a listen.

Refreshing. Where does he get into the FCC, think I'd like to hear that.

I found one he did with Joe Walsh. It's called Honey Don't. You can discern the Joe Walsh influence, but Walsh doesn't sing. You can sure hear the piano though :-) (I generally like songs with piano for some reason).

I can't hook you up to my P2P, but it is uploading to my FTP right now and will be available shortly.

It's strictly an mp3, I just played in in mediaplayer 7 so it should be safe.

Anyway, I like the style, unusual, more unusual than me (which is saying something).

As a budding composer I appreciat some things that are, well, seemingly out of line so to speak. Very refreshing. Now what about the FCC ?

Just checked the link, it works. Going to get a bunch of Joe Shaver, any recommendations ? Doesn't matter that much, I'll just grab about ten of them anyway, but if anyone has anything specific in mind I'd like to hear it. Sometimes the best stuff is not at the top of the list.

Billy Joe Shaver never made a bad song[;)].  Some of my faves off the top of my head are :
*Black Rose
*Ragged Old Truck
*Old Five and Dimers
*Fit To Kill (And Going Down In Style)
They're all good and he is a helluva songwriter.  Many of his hits have been recorded by others..........luci

So true.  When he lost his son Eddie to a drug overdose a few years back, that was so heartbreaking for him.  He just seems like a good ole boy - a heck of a good guy - who you'd just love to hang out with and listen to his stories.  I heard him tell one on XM Radio once about him and Waylon playing a little club somewhere and they got stiffed at the end of the night by not being paid.  He said as they were driving away, he heard this huge explosion.  He asked Waylon if he heard it too and he said, "Did I hear what?"[;)].  There's a whole circle of Texas singer-songwriters (and some not from TX) that I just love everything they do.  Besides Earle, VanZandt, and Shaver, I'd add:
Kris Kristofferson
Robert Earl Keen
Bruce and Charlie Robison
Jimmie Dale Gilmore
James McMurtry
Lyle Lovett
John Hiatt
Buddy and Julie Miller
Jerry Jeff Walker
Ray Wylie Hubbard
Guy Clark
Joe Ely
Chris Knight/Fred Eaglesmith
And tons of others...........................luci

Edited to add:  Check this out............

Spiritual advisor to Kinky Friedman?  What a job![:D]..............luci

Termyn8or -> RE: The real BOSS (7/2/2007 12:58:32 PM)

Joe Ely ? Midnight Shift was covered by Buddy Holly, it's a bit rare. Off an album called "Rock Around With Ollie Vee" something like that. Perhaps I'll upload it later.

Hmmmm, now that I mention it, Charles Hardin (Buddy) Holly was from Texas. Coincidence ?

Arpig -> RE: The real BOSS (7/2/2007 3:22:41 PM)
