actually im only speaking from what he experienced. His University has a very diverse cultural student population, but he did meet up with some whose views differed very greatly from how he was brought up.  That could have happened no matter where he went to school. i was not casting aspersions on a particular area at all.  Do you honestly think, that we dont have bigots in NY?

cassie

btw i was not referring to Hampton Roads or the Tidwater area

Diversity includes going to school with people who have never had to experience diversity.[;)]
The chances of meeting a larger number of folks like that would IMHO rise significantly if one went into the more rural western part of the state.
(Not to stereotype anyone of course).

I dont teach my UM that he has anything to fear from people who's skin is a different color, nor do I advocate racial supremacy. I lead a cub scout den that my son is a member of, I have UMs of three different races in my den. My UM plays with them at least once a week, twice on the last week of the month and there is a pack meeting. I treat every UM in my den the same, and insist that everyone around me does the same. I treat those UMs parents exactly the same as the other parents also. I dont feel safe in my neighborhood because its "all white" it happens to be but that is because its all family. Im sure there are other safe neighborhoods left in this country which are more diverse, but I know they are getting fewer and farther between.  Im am not bias because of anything I learned from my parents, I refuse to live anywhere else because i HAVE lived everywhere else. As a daughter of a methodist pastor who moved every two years, and as a military wife, I have lived in over 45 homes in 3 countries and I am only 27 years old. From personal experiance, life is easier when we live near others who believe the same as we do about child safety and responsibility. Its a fact of life, not everyone does.

I tried very hard to stay off the muslim topic in the OP. As the wife of a carreer military man who is gearing up for his 5th tour of duty in Iraq...I doubt many people here really want to hear what i have to say.

Most everyone on the boards knows I refer to myself as a redneck. Part of that stereotype includes "all us southerners are racist". Well, in truth. I am. Sorry, cant help it.

GhitaAmati
I am stereotypical towards the blacks in our town, but only because they have proved to me time and time again that the shoe fits and they are proud to wear it. Im not telling them to change their ways, just that me and their ways dont get along so Im gonna continue to live in my all white neighborhhod where I dont have to listen to blaring rap music at 2am.

Im not saying that there arent people of any race who are perfectly nice people, just like there are evil people of every race. Personally though, in my experiance....life just goes smoother if we all just stick to ourselves.

quote:

Eruditus
You poor, poor misguided white people. You've been misled! Manipulated. Do you really hate yourselves that much, that you want to become black...crossbred? Have you ever stopped to question the things which might have made you adopt this mindset? Why are minorities applauded for their racial pride, and whites vilified? I tell you...minorities can be the biggest eugenics-approvers in the world.

Let's talk about diversity, though. When I was an undergraduate at Rutgers, blacks stuck to themselves. Chinese stuck to themselves. Hispanics stuck to themselves. How's that for diversity?

Cultural pride is just fine, as long as it's not a white person indulging in it. Then it becomes racism.

You know i agree with about maybe 40% of domi ever posts and this falls into the other bracket. 1st let me say that Erud has a slight stick up his ass and that Ghaita can't hel that no one in her family decided to cross the race line when it came to dating or that they all chose to live right next to each other. Two. Eru feels that WHITE people have been brainwashed and shouldn't feel bad for being proud to be white? Doe sthat make him a racist? does that make him a memeber of the KKK couldn't tell you havent seent his inside of his place nor seen him a a meeting. Is Ghaita a bigot or a narrow minded white woman because the blacks she has had experiences with fit a good part of the stereo type? Not at all because you know what some of us do and they are the reason the stereotype persists, because2 out of every 5 black teens wants to be a thug.

Now that said i'd rather have a convo with Ghaita any day over Erus. One he seems like he can't see past how white people are made to feel quilty and two he has no sense of humor when it comes to topic changes.

LotusSong -> RE: Not For The Easily Offended (7/4/2007 9:53:50 AM)

<<I don't know who said it but it went something like this:

"I can't wait until we are all crossbred and become one race- that way we can judge people on their content of their character".

My god what a thought!  NOBODY could claim racism!  >>

Actually, it was a comedian who said it.  I remembered the quote, just not who said it.

Ghaita is an admitted racist....And our computer suggested that based on their speech and views that they would be an ideal match.....If you gotta beef..Talk to our programmers.

As far as having a conversation with either of them....I'd rather spend the time whittling.  Those two are not my cup o' joe....And you are right, how can you not have a sense of humor about topic changes?....Geeeez!

Is whitey a racist term?

instynctive -> RE: Not For The Easily Offended (7/4/2007 10:30:58 AM)

CM nailed it.

And also.. further thinking on the subject, it seems that often times there are people who are quick to label another as a racist if that person doesn't like someone of color for any reason.. for example.. "I'm getting sick of that black guy down the street letting his dog crap on my lawn."  Good god!  I'm a racist because I singled out the ethnicity of the inconsiderate dog owner!  Ummm.. no.  I'm really not.  In all actuality though, I'd be more likely to describe the dog... because I normally don't even LOOK at people, as I make it no secret that I prefer the company of animals. :-)

On the other hand, there are people like myself who really don't give a flying fuck WHAT shade of skin you have.  Still labeled "racist" or "whitey" or "cracker" regardless.  The only thing that troubles me is.. I have done NOTHING to repress ANYONE (unless they beg for it.. heh heh heh).  I have never owned a slave in my life.  None of my ancestors have owned probably owned slaves either, since for most part they all came from the highlands of Scotland and coast of Ireland, much more concerned about keeping their family fed and not concerned with property or any of the other crap that was going on in the world.

While yes, I do feel for the generations of blacks who were sold into slavery, there's nothing I can do about it, except to simply not repeat history.  Just because my skin is more of a rosy peach-ish hue does not mean I'm predisposed to hating anyone because of their color... nor that I have ever owned a slave or have supposrt slavery or any sort of militant supremist group intent on hurting others for the sake of hurting others.

Am I a "poor me whitey"?  No.  Do I tolerate the "poor me darkie" crap?  No.  No more than I would tolerate the Jews for still being pissed at the Egyptians, or the Gauls for being pissed at the Romans.  It is all history, and only because there are those unwilling/incapable of "letting go" (Farrakhan, Jackson, Sharpton).  MLK had the right idea... and it is sad he was assassinated before really enabling his ideas and dreams for peaceful union between the blacks and whites... instead of the militant "supremicist" radical views of Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam, and the constant useage of the race card by Jackson and Sharpton.

Sometimes people just need to put on their "big person panties" and get the hell over it.

CrimsonMoan -> RE: Not For The Easily Offended (7/4/2007 11:27:23 AM)

Exactly. Personally i think everyoen should just look at their family tree ten to one with enough shaking you are gonna find someone of a different race on a branch or two. i'm a mutt my kid is a bigger mutt. My brother is a mutt and so is his wife but she's a mediteranean/eurpoean mutt. Their kids are the biggest mutts in the family.

Now i'm not racist never have bene never will be but i'll admit my grandmother and my and a few of my aunts and unlces are somewhat like that. They came from down south, arkansa to be exact. They all but two came up during segegration and had to deal with that bullshit.  When my mother died not long after my dad  i had to deal wih them and the fact they that had problems with the fact that most of my friends were nonewhites. Did i go out of my way nto to have friends who were black? not at all, it just so happens i don't pick my friends on color or some ingrained need to represent my race.

No i pick my friends on the shit we have in common. My grandmother one said, "I'm don't hate white people. I just don't like them" horseshit to the 10th power. I'm sorry but as a kid of the 80s and 90s race didn't mean shit to me. Hell i didn't understand racism until I was older and in school and learned about it. Why? because t wasn't around in my life. I grew up in a very mixed neighborhood where all the kids were friends and so wehre the parents.

My parents had a diverse group of friend who i was exposed to and even a few gay boys. I learned from them and considering my mother ws the oldest of my grandmother's kids i am glad she didn't take after her. My father was older than my grandmother and from chattanooga Ten. His family was only a stones throw from our enslaved ancestors? Was he a bitter black man? Hell now. He was a decorated 'nam vet. They never one said don't talk tot his person or white peopel hold us back or what the fuck ever. They taught me to have pride in myself not BEACUSE I  was black, but because of who i was as a person. at the time a very bright and intelligent little girl .

And that's exactly it.. sure, take pride in yourself.. your family, your heritage, but don't use it as a crutch or a shield or an excuse of some sort.

Although... I am rather proud of my Scottish side.. Sotland was the only nation England couldn't conquer and *keep* conquered.. heh heh heh

Not bad for a bunch of pansies running around barefoot in skirts. ;-)

The Ancient Romans couldnt conquer and hold Scotland.

The emperor Hadrian built a wall to keep the damn Scots from going south and stealing cattle and sheep.  This is because the skirt wearing lunatics could scale any wall the Romans built, they couldnt figure out how to get sheep back to their side of the wall.

Well that's easy enough.. you get behind the sheep and *thrust* them over the wall with your hips.

Derrr..

I THOUGHT it was cute if it counts for anything. chalk it up to kilt wearing men and descendants are easily perturbed, but then again if i were you i would have been provoking the punishment :P.

GhitaAmati -> RE: Not For The Easily Offended (7/4/2007 2:29:11 PM)

hey..im a decendant of some of those kilt wearing men...so is the hubby actually...

Im very proud of my scottish heritage, even go to scottish highland games and cheer for my clan!

And Crimson, thank you for being the ONLY person on this thread to actually READ what I wrote. I stated time and time again that I was only predjudice against the blacks I had come in contact with in the town I currently live in, and had no problem admitting that I was quite sure they werent all like the folks Ive had my bad experiances with, only that I wasnt sure I wanted to test that theory and I prefer to live surrounded by my family.
