Some parts of the UK are submerged in water,well not entirely submerged,but upto four feet deep and has been that way for over a week. It has rained a lot,that is weather,but it appears not to be draining away.True it is the low lying areas that are affected(obviously),many properties being built on flood planes,but it is not draining. I thought perhaps it was because our waterways and drains are not really up to scratch,they have been neglected over the years. Has anyone any thoughts on this?

We've had 3x the usual amount of rain during June - the ground was saturated early on, so the next lots of rain couldnt drain away as usual. We also had a lot of short heavy bursts concentrated on small areas which caused flash floods. And then there's the problem of building on flood plains (clue to planners - theyre called flood plains because theyre flood plains) which means a lot of houses are going to get flooded, over and over again when the rivers break their banks. As for the drains and so on - they are up to normal levels of rain, but when one has all this rain in such bursts over such a period there is a lot of soil and other debris swept into the system, which then blocks the drains. And of course if the rivers are breaching their banks, there is generally nowhere for the water in the drains to go, so it backs up. Hopefully though the rain is now over (although it poured down here again today). The sun will shine. And by 15th July, we will have a hosepipe ban. E

The fact is that tho' we have had more rain, houses have been built over the last few years in areas that were known to be at risk from fast rising water due to the level of the water table. Its called "progress" or "profiteering" or "do not build more in my backyard, nimby'ism" depending on your political outlook.

You should be on the telly explaining it all LadyEllen - its the first time i've heard it explained so clearly.... thank you! Have to say that I chose the wrong year to have all my garden ripped up and paved, the drainage is good but struggling - im often to be seen out there with a large brush distributing the rainwater to other drains, wet through with bare feet due to the fact that I found a large spider in my wellies - bye bye wellies! bring me sunshine *wanders off humming a tune
