It seems a new trend is being set. Pre employment drug screening for nicotene.
I am almost speechless. The radical anti smoking police are over the top on this one. I see by the article they have banned trans fats from being served and sold at the hospital. Perhaps they need to drug test their employees to make sure they aren't snacking on a chip or two. Don't laugh, it will come.

On the positive side for smokers, if this trend takes on a life of it's own, smokers will be eligable for SSI disability based on their addiction and inability to be hired. Let the anti smoking Nazi's work and support you.

And yes, I am a smoker, trying very hard to quit, and have no problem with the bans in resturants, bars and public places. And not smoking in or on the grounds of the workplace.  But to tell me I am unable to work just goes so far over the top, it makes me ill.

you may want to applaud this now....but when they come for u?????
in America, the newest thing is obesity.........
how long will it take? first they talk about individuals health,,,next, how it effects others ,,then the cost to the tax payers for uninsured health cost of the overweight "(
hmmmmmmmm......
still think its ok?

Mbmbn,
I posted about this two years ago....everyone thought it was a joke. I also said at that time that there would come a day when you could be fired for getting caught eating french fries on your lunch hour. That was a joke too. Well, we're getting closer and closer to that reality. Wonder when people will no longer think it's funny?

LadyEllen -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 4:18:03 PM)

I think the clinic should introduce a programme of screening employees for coughs and colds on a daily basis too.

Damned diseased people spreading their second hand germs about the place - selfish scum!

And this of course would provide an excellent example to patients too; dont turn up at the clinic if youre not feeling well - we dont want what youve got.

I forgot to mentiopn that this Cleveland Clinic is also in Ohio.
The Cleveland Clinic is the second largest employer in Ohio. Not sure where it ranks in Fl.

instynctive -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 4:24:22 PM)

I think it's amazing how the government feels it has the right to step in and essentially shut down big companies because their products are deemed "unhealthy".  Bear in mind this is the same government that issued Pall Malls to the GIs during the World Wars.

This can and will get completely out of hand if these radicals don't get snapped back and quickly.  Target obesity next and I don't get to enjoy my monthly Big Mac.  Target alcohol and have a second prohibition.  Hell, let's outlaw everything someone deems "bad" for us (are eggs good for us or bad for us this week?) and shut those companies down too.

All this from the ruling class who thinks stem cell research means going out an harvesting unborn fetuses at random.  Fucking idiots.  Maybe it's time to move to the moon.

Of course that's illegal because the lack of atmosphere and near zero gravity is probably bad for me too.  At least I can't smoke up there.

I hate that kind of thing, too, mb. Here's some more to curdle your Cheerios:

That's not correct. Vastly different generations.

Maybe so, but I still view it as hypocrasy.

LadyEllen -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 4:30:02 PM)

What I view as hypocrisy is that our government is on the one hand berating us for smoking and costing the health system a fortune........ whilst on the other hand its relying on the equivalent of eight dollars per packet sold in taxes to provide health services.....

Okay, but I honestly don't see how it's hypocritical when you're talking about totally different people that lived decades apart. It's like saying the government is hypocritical now for outlawing slavery, because the government in 1860 said it was legal.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 4:56:34 PM)

I really don't understand with all the discrimination laws, how it is possible for an employer to exclude one particular group of people, for participating in a 100% legal activity on their own time and dime.

It is in my view completely in any businesses right not allow smoking at work. It's their business. But if this kind of hiring practice is allowed, it would seem entirely possible for religious business owners not to hire employees that eat pork!! Why not? Explain the real difference, please.

Or exclude fat people.

Or why not exclude, people that drink alcohol ever.

Or why not exclude those that eat meat in general.

It really is the exact same thing. They all involve employers making a judgement of whether to hire you or not based on decisions of what you do on your free time.

It's none of their business. And if people don't grow some balls, the next logical progression is monitoring food intake.

It's unfortunate that people are blind to the slow wearing down of the stone. You can get away and do anything to the public as long as you do it slowly, and it appears most of them won't even notice!!

Aneirin -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 4:59:05 PM)

In the past it was ethnic minorities, comunists until that became politically incorrect. So what can we focus on to change next.I know,we'll focus our attention on smokers first, then it will be those who are in others opinnion obese, what's next?

People with spots?

Honestly, reading this, the film Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' sprang to mind.

What does this world want?

Perfection?

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 5:15:28 PM)

i pay $40 a more for my insurance through work because i smoke.....i hope to be quit before open enrollment rolls around in december again......it is an expensive and gross addiction, and the money i will have in my pocket is the motivation im trying to use for my self.....

that said, alchoholics have more health costs, people with disabilities such as arthritis, endometriosis, folks that are not healthy in general(be they too fat or too thin or just bad genetics), someone born with downs syndrome, folks with diabetes 1, crazy folks who use the maximun on the psyche part of the insurance, migraine sufferers, allergy sufferers, eczema, hemmorhoids, chrohns disease......blah blah blah.....

maybe they should say if you have any kind of illness that makes you use our insurance, we wont hire you......then all the perfect specimens of humanity can work their perfect lil asses off and sweetly send me a check from their tax dollars that will keep me in the lifestyle ive grown accustomed to (lower middle class or upper poverty level class).

and yes i know smoking is a choice, while many of the other diseases i mentioned are not.....but hell i have plenty of smoker friends who are never sick and have only used their insurance for a broken leg or some other accident they had.......so lets not allow common sense to color our solution to this massive health care problem.

lawd knows no one except smokers will require lots of health care as they age.....forget strokes and heart attacks and alzheimers and work accidents and and and

i think i just threw up a little in my mouth

Alumbrado -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 5:17:05 PM)

This is has been going on for quite a while, some employers have been banning tobacco use on and off the job for years, and the right of an employer to control employee behaviors, appearance, etc.  has been upheld in the courts for decades.

Doesn't mean that anyone has to like it or agree with it, but it is not new.

mistoferin -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 5:36:19 PM)

Howard Weyers of Weyco Insurance began this process back in 2003. He was the first. He announced the new policy, stopped hiring smokers, gave employees X amount of time to quit, then began nicotine testing them. Anyone who had not quit would be fired. He also wishes to extend the policy to employees spouses.

His long term plans include weight control. He wishes to implement a plan where you will have to fall within the accepted height/weight guidelines to be hired and your cholesterol has to be within acceptable levels. Current employees will have to show documented exercise, they will have X amount of time to get their weight within approved height/weight guidelines and their cholesterol levels will have to be within acceptable range.

How do I know this? I personally used to work with the man and had many long meetings with him on the subjects. I never thought he could make his ideas fly but they (at least the smoking one) are now a matter of public record.

Uwince, I can't wait until they come for the "politically correct" assholes!
We can drag them behind a pick-up truck truck to the town square, "frankenstein torches" everywhere, people throwing all kinds of shit at them, hitting them with baseball bats!
Hell, I'll point them out!
"There's one!!!" "That fuckin ANAL-RETENTIVE Librarian who made everyone's life a living hell!"
Cries of "Burn the Bitch at the stake!"
Good stuff!

Oh, not hiring smokers, "What? You won't hire me because I smoke?
"Nice building you have here!" Got a match?
"Are the insurance rates high on this place?"

You're right, I'm wrong.  I'll adjust my way of thinking.

No, he was not the first... he made news for implementing on the job tobacco testing and enforcing the policy using the results of the tests, but other employers had such policies going back to the 1980s if not earlier.

mistoferin -> RE: Smokers ned not apply (7/3/2007 5:46:09 PM)

Well, without testing what weight could such a policy possibly carry. I really am not aware of a company who implemented such a policy, backed it up with testing and defended this all the way through the court system as Weyco did.
