Lord knows how many times I've listened to the Mamas and Papas sing 'California Dreamin'.

But I got hold of the song lyrics today... and I learn.....

'Well I got down on my knees and I began to pray' should really be 'Well I get down on my knees and I pretend to pray'.

Also 'Can't afford the treatment on such a winter's day' is actually 'California dreamin on such a winter's day'.

Does anyone else have any other song lyrics they were sure they heard being sung but actually weren't?

The one that really comes to mind is Marzy Doats. I had it on 45 when I was a kid and I thought the lyrics were completely nonsensical. I mean I had this when I was like six, so at about 43 (I'm 46 now) I found out. Not the most profound revelation in the world, but it stunned me momentarily because the mystery had lasted so long, and was so simple.

Mares eat oats and does eat oats,
And little lambs eat ivy,
A kid'll eat ivy too,
Do you ?

There are others. I believe I read those true lyrics somewhere. Other lyrics I have deciphered by buying Boston Acoustics speakers. I remember when I first got them, quite a few times I backed a disc up a bit to hear one part again, revealing that I had heard it wrong for decades. Then thinking "Damn, that makes alot more sense".

The reason for the clarity is, even though they are a bit bassy as speakers go, they have a bigger magnet on the midrange. I mean bigger than the woofer. I have never heard clearer speakers, but I have heard them that were just as good, just not better. And I have auditioned all kinds of speakers. Kantons for example are just as clear, but my view is once you got perfection there is no better.

I will think of more. I mean I could be sitting here on a Friday night with a bunch of buddies over and stop a song and say "SHUTUP", back it up and listen to a certain part again.

I think misunderstanding the lyrics to songs is common, and not always because of cheap speakers, sometimes they put so much effect and EQ on the singers voice it doesn't matter what speakers you have.

Ummm, I know this is humor, but there is a caveat. When you go on the web you can find song lyrics, be careful. There are a couple of sites that load you up with spyware and shit.

Yup, marzy doats and dozey doats and..........

One of my most favorite songs when I was a kid.  (California Dreamin' that is.)  As for song lyrics, don't trust ones that you get online.  They are usually wrong.  Or sometimes, singer/band will sing a alternate/or slightly different version.  But anyways, "pretend to pray was what I heard growing up."  just before my family quit going to church. lol

btw Stella, like your new pic!:)

It is "began to pray".
I used to think that Jimi Hendrix sang "Excuse me while I kiss this guy" in "Purple Haze". It was a couple of years before I actually saw the lyrics and it was "Excuse me while I kiss the sky".

lol just a few years ago, I started actually listening to the words of some songs that I grew up with, and I can't help but be suprised at what my parents let me listen too. **snickers** the only time my dad wouldn't let me listen to something, was Extreme's xtreme pornograffiti tape.

When I listened to "Blinded by the Light", I was totally puzzled. I thought they were saying
"blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche, another aroma in the night". Came as a surprise to find out that it was

Blinded by the light,
revved up like a deuce,
another runner in the night

Thank goodness it was not just me, then. *L* I was wondering why the band had a feminine hygeine fixation.

I think one of the classic mis-hearings of lyrics actually became the song title....

"In a Gadda Da Vida" was supposed to be "In the Garden of Eden" but the rockers were too stoned to make sense to the record producer when they recorded it.

And other cute urban legends,
Stefan

the 'chicken slats' are where you put your hands on your knees and move them back and forth and thru optical illusion make it look like you are crossing them with one another
