ORIGINAL: farglebargle On June 14, 1777, in order to establish an official flag for the new nation, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act: "Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." 1776, July 4 -- Signing of the Declaration of Independence. << GADSDEN FLAG -- Don't Tread On Me. 1777, April 20 -- Ratification of the NYS Constitution << NYS FLAG -- EXCELSIOR!!! 1777, June 14 -- Continental Congress passes the first Flag Act 1777, November 15 -- Adoption of the Articles of Confederation 1781, March 1 -- Ratification of the Articles of Confederation 1787, September 17 -- Adoption of the US Constitution <<<< US FLAG HERE WOULD BE APPROPRIATE 1789, May 29 -- Ratification of the US Constitution <<<< THIS IS THE ONE US FLAGS ARE FOR. And what exactly are you arguing then???? The only difference between that flag of 1777 and today is that we 50 stars instead of 13 because we now have 50 states. The flag today represents everything that is America including the constitution. But for you to complain about seeing the flag....that's just kind of stupid, man. This is the flag that George Washington and the Continental Army flew under in the revolution. And you are trying to say that we should be flying our state flags and never the national flag? New York wasn't the only state to declare independence. It was 13 states that came together to defeat the Brits. The Declaration was not even signed in New York, so why should I fly the New York flag on July 4?
