Just to wish our Americian members Happy 4th of July hope you all have a great day

        All my Mexican neighbors, who occasionally serenade us with mariachi until the wee hours, got a return dose of Jimi Hendrix playing The Star-Spangled Banner when I put out the flag this morning.

      It's a small tradition, but it's mine.  Happy Fourth all!

       Yeah, Fargle, I've heard the theory that his starting the day with that performance was some sort of protest.  I also know that he was a veteran of military service, and that is how you start the day.

      I love his interpretation.  I consider it a celebration of the freedom we have here.

I think the irony that a veteran black man, poster child for counter-culture, playing the national anthem (wonderfully, I might add) was (and is) completely lost on the Right Wingers who sought to ban rock and roll as being unpatriotic and rebellious of Truth, Justice, and the American Way.

p.s.  Clinton made an interesting point (quoted in the current Rolling Stone).  He said that if one considered the 1960s as being a mostly positive time for the US culture, that person is probably a Democrat.  If one considered the 1960s as being a negative time for the US culture, that person is probably a Republican.

fargle, a lot of the celebrations around the area where I live had to be cancelled because of the malevolent weather system.

Awwww...

Personally, I took it as a sign that God was punishing America for being so naughty abroad recently.

And I am never happier than when there is no bloody flag flying around. That flag is just about the most misused and abused symbol today.

And the first person that tells me to go back to where I come from will get a kick of a pointy stilleto where it hurts :-)

I fly the NY State flag PROUDLY, but the Stars and Stripes, never.

I think the absolute biggest fucking idiots are those who by the flag napkins and paper cups. I mean, I hate the fucking thing, but could you imagine anything more disrespectful than tossing it in the garbage or wiping your greasy hands with it?

It's a symbol.

And the flag was used during the Revolutionary war in 1776. The only difference was that there was only 13 stars and they were in a circle pointing outward.

        Really, Sinergy...  Such cultural ignorance is hard to fathom from someone who quotes punk lyrics.  I imagine the 1967 Al Gore was as wasted as his offspring was when pulled over doing 100 mph on the 405.  I was referencing the mid-80's model who permanently lost my vote.

        Look at a bit more of the schedule Fargle.  The closing act on Saturday was Jefferson Airplane, who took the stage at 8:00 am on Sunday.  If Jimi was the closing act on the Sunday schedule, I feel safe saying he started a day, Monday, with that song.  Isn't it daylight during his performance in the film?

      I always took the meaning of that performance to be "Fuck you.  It's my country too."  Can we at least agree on that?

And what exactly are you arguing then????

The only difference between that flag of 1777 and today is that we 50 stars instead of 13 because we now have 50 states.

The flag today represents everything that is America including the constitution. But for you to complain about seeing the flag....that's just kind of stupid, man. This is the flag that George Washington and the Continental Army flew under in the revolution. And you are trying to say that we should be flying our state flags and never the national flag?

New York wasn't the only state to declare independence. It was 13 states that came together to defeat the Brits.
The Declaration was not even signed in New York, so why should I fly the New York flag on July 4?
