Iraqis choose Sweden as new home
By Stina Backer
BBC News, Amal

Halim Ibrahim and his family are among the half of all Iraqis who choose Sweden as their destination when they flee to Europe from their war-torn homeland.

"We wanted to get as far away from Iraq as possible," said 50-year-old Halim, standing outside his ground floor flat in southern Sweden.

"Everyone wants to go to Sweden, it has always been good to Iraqis. They respect human rights here. I wanted my children to grow up in a safe country, that's why we chose Sweden," said Halim.

The Ibrahims are not alone in coming to Sweden to make a new home.

Farewell to a changed, subtle Iran

Frances Harrison is moving on after three years as the BBC correspondent in Tehran. It has been a period of change, she writes, but generally not for the better, particularly for women.
When I first came to Iran the reformists were still in power, not the ultra-conservative President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  But to me as a newcomer, the government then did not seem particularly liberal.

The reformists were not quite what they had been cracked up to be in the West.

Malaysia 'convert' claims cruelty
By Jonathan Kent

Japan 'must boost missile shield'

Japan says it aims to erect a missile defence shield as quickly as possible, to counter the threat from North Korea.  In its annual report, the defence ministry warns that Pyongyang is now producing sophisticated weapons.

It also says that one of the prime objectives of the Japanese military is to conduct peacekeeping missions.

While many people in Japan welcome attempts to increase its international role, others fear a more assertive Japan may trigger a regional arms race.

London marks 2nd anniversary of bombings
By PAISLEY DODDS, Associated Press Writer2 hours, 18 minutes ago

Britain marked the second anniversary of the London suicide bombings Saturday, a grim reminder as the country confronted a new wave of terrorism, and an Iraqi doctor appeared in court on charges linked to the most recent foiled attacks.

Bilal Abdullah, a 27-year-old doctor born in Britain and raised in Iraq, appeared in a London court amid tight security after he and another man allegedly crashed a gas-laden Jeep Cherokee into the main terminal of Scotland's largest airport.

Accused of conspiring to cause explosions, he is the first to be charged of eight suspects arrested over foiled car bomb attacks in London and Glasgow a week ago. Abdullah, who spoke only to confirm his name and birth date, was ordered to appear at London's Central Criminal Court on July 27.
