yes, although motivations for it are frequently different. One can be "I'm desperate and want to find a partner and I'll list as everything I can to get that chance" - which is one of the truths about some people that give all switches a bad rep, because then the ones that got burned assume all switches are like that. It can be "I need to have fellow subs to share experiences with and get advice from, but I'm a domme and looking for subs and if I list as a switch I find neither thing I need". It can be the reason I use, which was a desire to have a place to write and journal about M, ask questions as a sub, and say I was "taken" while still having a personals listing saying I'm looking (as a domme), but not having to deal with as many people wanting me to sub to them.

He sure could have, but until you've called yourself a switch and dealt with all the assumptions, stereotypes, and crap that fall along with it, you probably won't understand why many people choose not to list that way.

When what you want is ANY attention from the opposite sex, then ANY attention from the opposite sex is what you need. People lie all the time because honesty won't get them what they want. Chalk him up as another of them.
